Geek Picnic is a large European popular science festival and open air , dedicated to modern technology, science and creativity [1] [2] .

The first festival was held in St. Petersburg in 2011. Since 2014, Geek Picnic has been held in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 2016, the first Geek Picnic was held in Israel [3] .

Festivals
2011
The first Geek Picnic in the format of a city picnic was held on August 6, 2011 on the island of New Holland in the center of St. Petersburg. In the open air there were modern game consoles, a 3D printer , robots, unicycles and jumpers , a games area and a sports ground [4] . The festival attracted more than 1,500 visitors.
2012
On August 3, 2012, the second Geek Picnic was held at the New Holland site. This year the festival had a rich program of events of popular science content. The territory was divided into two parts: an exhibition of robotics, lectures and master classes from specialists of Russian IT companies, an informal job fair for programmers, as well as Windows Windarium lectures were presented in the education and career zones; in the rest of the space there is an open library, a games area, a sports ground and a picnic area. In addition, lectures in the TEDx format, organized jointly with the TEDx Neva River , were held for the first time, in which Gaydar Magdanurov, Grachik Adzhamyan, Alexey Voinov, Philip Katz, Kirill Shikhanov and Yuri Lifshits spoke. The event was attended by about 7000 people [5] .
2013
In 2013, Geek Picnic became a two-day event (August 3 and 4) and moved to Elagin Island . For the first time, the site was divided into 4 zones: technology , science , art , a picnic . In the zones, participants could get acquainted with the latest developments in the field of robotics and 3D printers, the Museum of Interactive Science, the exhibition of meteorites [6] , and the Fab lab [2] . In each of the thematic zones, together with exhibitions, lectures were held by invited entrepreneurs, teachers and world-famous scientists. Among them were the famous pilot-cosmonaut Alexander Volkov, the lead teacher of the reality show “Polyglot” on the TV channel “Culture” Dmitry Petrov , the engineer Anatoly Wasserman , the historian Lev Lurie and the world's first man with a bionic prosthetic arm Nigel Auckland [1] . In parallel with the lecture, the championship of Russia among quadrocopters was held [7] [8] [9] . The recreation area housed a large food court , a playground for games and several open-air exhibitions [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] . Over two days, the festival was attended by about 15,000 people [5] .
2014
The first “winter session” of the festival was held in Moscow on the territory of the All-Russian Exhibition Center on January 25-26, 2014. The area of 15 thousand square meters was divided into several thematic zones: technology, science, art, lecture hall, children's zone, recreation and entertainment [15] . Anatoly Wasserman and futurist writer Dmitry Glukhovsky gave lectures at the festival, the founder of the Venus project Jacques Fresco held a Skype conference, musician Alexandr Robotnik and the Desert Planet project spoke in . They showed the world's largest Tesla coil , a prototype of a 3D bioprinter, quadrocopters, sculptures of transformers and robot samples, such as an “assistant” for carrying Exoatlet weights and the French android InMoove [16] [17] [18] . The event was attended by 30 thousand guests.
The "summer" Geek Picnic was held in St. Petersburg on Elagin Island on August 9 and 10. About 60 scientific lectures and 30 workshops on robotics and personal creativity, drone championships, robot competitions and programming championships, the Do It Yourself interactive zone, Robot Park, a zone with 3D printers were organized [19] [20] . 3D Print Fashion was held - a fashion show of clothes printed on a 3D printer, authorship of Larisa Katz, Pia Hinze and Joshua Harker [21] . About 18 thousand people came to the festival [22] [23] .
2015
In Moscow, the festival was held on June 13-14 at Krasnaya Presnya . Events were held in the areas of "Technology", "Science", "Art", "Picnic", "Expo" and "Market" [24] . The central event of GikPiknik was the congress of people who modified their bodies with bionic prostheses. Among them were “ cyborg ” activist Neil Harbisson , the first man with artificial vision, Jens Naumann, drummer with a robotic arm, Jason Barnes , model and singer Victoria Modesta [25] . Also at the “Picnic” were musicians playing instruments printed on a 3D printer. For two days there was an exhibition of art objects, a pyrotechnic show, an unmanned drone championship, a programming championship and several dozen lectures, including speeches by Kirill Serebrenikov , Anatoly Wasserman , test cosmonaut Sergei Ryazansky , artist Boryana Ross . Cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko contacted the participants of the festival from the ISS [26] . The event was attended by 22 thousand people [27] [28] .
The program of the St. Petersburg festival, held on Elagin Island on June 20-21, was similar to the Moscow one. Visitors were greeted by a six-ton robotic arm [29] . Among the “cyborgs” were activist Nicholas Houche and singer Victoria Modesta. Among the lecturers were the director of the Pushkin Museum Marina Loshak , the director and director of the Tovstonogov Theater Andrei Moguchy , the musician Oleg Nesterov , the director of the Media Culture laboratory Andrei Svibovich and other scientists and artists. In the “Free Microphone Zone”, participants in the Pecha Kucha project gave a lecture. Summer Geek Picnic was visited by about 25 thousand people [30] .
2016
April 25-27 in Saker Park In the center of Jerusalem, the first Israeli Geek Picnic was held, to which more than 35 thousand people came. There were about 150 exhibition stands at the event, of which about 75% were Israeli teams [3] .
The Moscow festival was held on June 18-19 at the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve, in St. Petersburg on June 25-26 on Elagin Island. The headliner of Russian festivals was the host of Legend Destroyers Jamie Heineman . In total, more than 40 people delivered lectures, including science journalist Asya Kazantseva , sculptor Andrei Bartenev, political scientist Anatoly Wasserman, space popularizer Vitaly Yegorov, space pilot and hero of Russia Anton Shkaplerov and others. Traditionally, the festival was divided into zones "Science", "Technology", "Art" and "Picnic". At the St. Petersburg festival ITMO University had its own section, in Moscow - at the Polytechnic University . The rover from SPbGUT and the five-meter Dragon robot created at the Moscow Polytechnical Institute were shown [31] [32] [33] [34]
Geek Picnic in 2016 broke the record for attendance: 29 thousand people attended the St. Petersburg festival, the Moscow event attracted 27 thousand spectators [34] .
2017
In 2017, the Moscow Geek Picnic was held on June 17-18 in the territory of the Kolomenskoye museum-estate. The festival in St. Petersburg took place a week later, on June 24-25, moving to Pulkovo Park in the south of the city.
The main theme of the festivals of 2017, co-organized by Kaspersky Lab , is called the "games of the mind." Among the more than 20 invited researchers are Alexander Panchin , Peter Levich, Ilya Zakharov, Daniel Laman and Vasily Klyucharyov. Richard Dawkins , a popularizer of science, became a key lecturer in the St. Petersburg festival, and astrophysicist Lawrence Krauss acted as the main guest of the festival in Moscow [35] .
2018
In 2018, the festival was planned to be held in three cities at once: August 11 - 12 in Moscow, August 18 - 19 in St. Petersburg and September 15 - 16 in Krasnodar. His theme was the evolution of man along with scientific and technological progress.
Liza Randall (an expert in elementary particle physics, string theory and cosmology), Seth Stevens-Davidowitz (a former Google employee and author of the book “Everybody Lies. Search Engines, Big Data and the Internet Know Everything About You”), Maxim Didenko () one of the most popular theater directors in Russia) and more than 30 lecturers. Among the venues of the festival, a representative office of Chaos Constructions worked.
