Biography
The eldest son of Archibald Douglas ( 1390 - 1439 ), 5th Earl of Douglas ( 1424 - 1439 ), and Efimia Graham (until 1413 - 1468 ), daughter of Patrick Graham (? - 1413 ), Earl of Stratern, and Efimia Stewart, Countess Stratern.
In June 1439, after the death of his father, William Douglas inherited the title and possession of Count Douglas. He also wore the titles of Earl of Wigtown, Lord Galloway , Botwell, Selkirk, Etrick Forest, Eskdale, Lauderdale and Annandale.
Married Janet Lindsay, daughter of David Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Crawford, to inherit County Crawford after the death of her father.
In 1439, after the death of the regent of the kingdom of Archibald Douglas, the 5th Earl of Douglas, power in Scotland was divided between Sir William Crichton (? - 1454 ), 1st Lord Crichton, Sir Alexander Livingston (? - 1451 ), and Sir James Douglas ( 1371 - 1443 ), Count Avondale. They decided to destroy the family of former regent Archibald Douglas and summoned his sons William and David Douglas to Edinburgh Castle . On November 24, 1440, at the so-called Black Dinner, the brothers William and David Douglas were accused of treason and executed in the presence of the young King James II Stuart .
After the death of 16-year-old William Douglas, 6th Earl of Douglas, and his younger brother David, the possessions of the Black Douglas family were confiscated. Annadale and Bothwell departed to the crown, Galloway was transferred to Margaret Douglas (William Douglas's sister), and the lands and title of Earl of Douglas received William Douglas, Earl of Avondale - the cousin of the murdered William Douglas.
Family
He was married to Janet Lindsay (d. 1483/1484 ), daughters of David Lindsay (d. 1446 ), 3rd Earl of Crawford ( 1438 - 1446 ), and Marjorie Ogilvy. The marriage was childless.
