Biography
He studied in Berlin under Philip Spitta , defended and published his thesis " J.P. Sweelink and his direct German students" ( German: J. R. Sweelinck and seine directen deutschen Schüler , 1891 ). His other significant work is The History of Piano Music ( German: Geschichte der Klaviermusik , 1899 ), which represents a cardinal reworking of The History of Keyboard Art and Keyboard Literature by K. F. Weizmann with the additions of O. Fleischer . From 1892 he led the publishing project “Monuments of German music” ( German “Denkmäler deutscher Tonkunst” ).
Founder (together with Carl Augustus Rau ) of the first in Germany Institute for Musicological Studies ( him. Institut für musikwissenschaftliche Forschung , 1917 ), in 1935 transformed into the State Institute of German Musicology ( him. Staatliches Institut für deutsche Musikforschung ); led this institute from 1921 (the year of Rau’s death) to 1941 .
