History

The city is known as the Colombian Golden Gate ( Spanish: La Puerta de Oro de Colombia ). At the moment, there is no exact indication of the city’s founding date, however the first mention of it is dated 1629 . Despite this, local residents prefer to consider April 7 as the day of foundation of Barranquilla - the date when the current status of the village was given to the current city in 1813 . In 1834, Barranquilla numbered 11,212 people (according to the official census), slightly less than the city of Santa Marta , and no less than half the city of Cartagena . By the beginning of the 20th century, Barranquilla became a major port. This city became a shelter for several waves of emigrants from Europe , as well as from the Middle East and Asia during the first and second world wars.

The first airport in South America was also built in Barranquilla.

In the early 70s, there was a project to assemble the Yak-40 Soviet passenger aircraft in Barranquilla. In 1972, one aircraft was assembled, and the project was closed [2] .

Water Transport

Despite the fact that Barranquilla is located 15 km from the sea and stands on the river, this city has recently become a major port. Until the end of the 19th century, ships carrying goods along the Magdalena River used the coastal city of Cartagena, located in the southwest, as a port. They descended along Magdalena to the city of Kalamar (about 100 km south of Barranquilla) and from there followed further along the canal connecting Kalamar with the Caribbean Sea. Then the Magdalena delta was difficult to access for ships, and only special hydraulic works at the end of the 19th century changed the situation for the better. Measures to regulate the bottom along with the construction of the harbor of Barranquilla contributed to the transformation of this city into the largest port of Colombia. From here, Colombian coffee is exported by sea to all countries of the world. In addition to coffee, important export products are textiles, cement , chemical products.
