Biography

Born in 1914 in with. Albai of the Shemorbash volost of the Mamadysh district of the Kazan province. Russian.

In the Red Army since 1935. He graduated from the school of observer pilots named after K. E. Voroshilov.

Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He served in long-range aviation. He fought on the southern front .

The commander of the 81st long-range bomber aviation regiment, Lieutenant Georgy Smirnov, made 22 sorties, dropped 17 tons of aerial bombs on the enemy, knocked out three fighters and four enemy tanks. Twice his plane fell under enemy fire and twice the pilot successfully landed the plane.

On July 25, 1941, performing a combat mission in the area of ​​the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kiev region consisting of 8 aircraft, the machine of Junior Lieutenant Georgy Smirnov was subjected to heavy fire by the enemy’s anti-aircraft artillery. Despite numerous holes, with a damaged gas tank, reaching the target, Smirnov dropped bombs and shot down a fascist fighter. Returning, he was attacked by four enemy aircraft, but, maneuvering, shot down another enemy fighter and was able to return to base on one engine.

On August 20, 1941, near the city of Dnepropetrovsk, the plane of Smirnov was shot down by enemy fighters. He brought the burning plane to its territory, made it possible for the crew to escape, he himself left the plane last, having received burns. He refused the hospital, continuing to fly on combat missions.

On the night of October 31, 1941, the crew of the TB-3 aircraft, consisting of junior lieutenant commander G. S. Smirnov, bombardier marksman lieutenant V.P. Kirillovich, junior sergeant A.A. Zakharchenko air gunner, and junior sergeant M.A. Sotova received many holes when returning from a combat mission. The main tank was broken, one of the engines was disabled, as well as a radio station. There was a big fire on board. In the area of ​​his airfield, the navigator with a rocket requested a landing, but there was no response from the ground. The crew tried to find their airfield. At 4 hours 00 minutes the fuel ran out and the commander made an emergency landing near the village of Severnoe, Aleksandrovsky District, Ordzhonikidzevsky Territory. When landing in conditions of heavy fog, the plane crashed into the slope of the ravine. After landing, Smirnov managed to remove the crew members from the burning plane and provide them with the necessary assistance.

The navigator V.P. Kirillovich died 30 minutes after landing. Junior lieutenant G. S. Smirnov and junior sergeant M. M. Sotov were sent to the Ordzhonikidze hospital. Junior sergeant A.A. Zakharchenko was not injured during landing.

November 5, 1941 G. S. Smirnov was awarded the rank of lieutenant.

On November 9, 1941, Lieutenant G. S. Smirnov died of wounds in a hospital. He was buried in the city of Stavropol in a mass grave.

Lieutenant G.S. Smirnov twice introduced himself to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1941 and 1942. However, the submissions were not implemented, documents were lost.

After the war, relatives became aware that Smirnov introduced himself to the title of Hero, they decided to restore justice. First, the widow of Smirnov went to the archives, and then his son, Gennady Smirnov. Searches lasted about 50 years. For help, Gennady Smirnov turned to the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin. Justice triumphed only 67 years after the death of Smirnov.

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 327 of March 8, 2008, for the courage and heroism shown in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, Lieutenant Smirnov Georgy Semenovich was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation .

The award was to be presented in Moscow at the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. But at the request of Smirnov made an exception. May 14, 2008 in Kazan, in the homeland of Smirnov, in a festive atmosphere, the " Golden Star " of the Hero of Russia was awarded to his children.

In the city of Kazan, in Victory Park, near the eternal flame, among the marble tablets with the names of Heroes, there is also a tablet with the name of the Hero of Russia G.S. Smirnov.
