On October 8, 1967, the Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara was captured by the Bolivian army collaborating with the CIA in the nearby Quebrada del Churo Gorge , ending his campaign to create a continental revolution in South America . Che Guevara was transferred to the school building, where he was killed the next day. After that, the body was delivered to Vallegrand , where it was put on public display, and then secretly buried under the runway.

Che tourism

“Tourists from all over the world, traveling, visit La Iguera. One Frenchman opened a dormitory in a telegraph room, where the partisans made their last attempt to establish contact with the outside world. Nearby, Cuban doctors treat needy farm workers for free. Images of a revolutionary hang in the huts of villagers, and many people pray “Santo Ernesto” ( St. Ernesto ), who is said to perform miracles. ”
Der Spiegel , October 2007 [1]

The El Che monument and the memorial in the former school building are the main attraction of the area. La Iguera is a stop at the Ruta del Che (Che Guevara Trail), opened in 2004 . [2]
