Description

The picture shows a rural holiday. The fun takes place on the street, near the village houses, not far from the church, which is visible in the background. The figures of dancing peasants are shown in the center and on the right side of the picture. The couple depicted in the foreground on the right is in a hurry to join the bulk of the dancers [3] .

Another pair shown in the foreground is a piper who puffed out his cheeks and played a bagpipe , and turned to him by a young peasant sitting next to him and holding a jug of wine [4] [5] .

To their left is a table on which bread lies and another jug of wine stands. The peasants sitting at the table are arguing heatedly over something, waving their arms - it is possible that this argument will end in a fight. Behind them - a kissing couple, and to the right, at the door of the inn - a quarreling married couple [6] .

Brueghel presents a picture of peasant entertainment not from the point of view of moralism, but as an outside observer [6] . Unlike other Brueghel paintings, here the viewer sees what is happening not from top to bottom, but from the same level as the peasants depicted, as if he came close to them [7] .

History

It is believed that the painting "Peasant Dance", written around 1568, is part of a series of three works by Brueghel, which also includes the paintings " Wedding Dance " (1566) and " Peasant Wedding " (1567 or 1568) [8] .
