History

Volleyball appeared in Canada in 1900 , thanks to the popularization activities of the Young Christians Association ( YMCA ). Canada was the first country to which a new game was moved from the United States . In 1953, the Canadian Volleyball Association (now Volleyball Canada) was organized. In 1959 she became a member of the FIVB .

For the first time at the official level, the national women's national team of Canada was formed only in 1967 to participate in the Pan American Games held in Canada's Winnipeg . At this tournament, the hostesses of the Games were unsuccessful, “dry” losing all their played 5 matches.

The first medals on the international arena, Canadian volleyball players were able to win in 1973 at the NORCECA championship . In the semifinals of the competition, the Canadians defeated the US team 3: 1, but in the final in three games they lost to the Cuban team , becoming the silver medalists of the tournament.

In the future, the Canadian team regularly took part in major international competitions, but all its medal achievements are associated only with tournaments on the American continent. 10 times Canadian volleyball players were winners of North American championships , although the last time they managed to climb the podium of these tournaments was only in 1999 . If in the 1980s and 1990s only the national teams of Cuba and the USA were ahead in the continental ranking of canadas, then with the beginning of the 21st century, the national teams of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were also supplanted from the top three by the Canadian team.

Negatively, the results of the national team of Canada are affected by the lack of a professional volleyball league in the country. In recent years, the Canadian Championship is held irregularly and amateur teams representing regional volleyball associations participate in it. All this leads to the fact that the best Canadian volleyball players go to foreign clubs to develop their playing career and it is far from always possible to attract all the strongest to play for the national team.

In 2017, the famous Italian specialist Marcello Abbondantsa was appointed the new head coach of the Canadian national team.
