Biography
Son of John Hamilton (c. 1535 - 1604), 1st Marquis of Hamilton (1599-1604), and Margaret Lyon (? - 1625), widow of Gilbert Kennedy (c. 1541 - 1576 ), 4th Earl of Cassillis, daughter of John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis.
In April 1604, after the death of his father, James Hamilton inherited paternal titles and estates.
In March 1609, after the death of his childless uncle James Hamilton , 3rd Earl of Arran, James Hamilton inherited the title of Earl of Arran.
He moved to England with King James VI Stuart , invested in a London company , bought up shares of Lucy Harrington, Countess Bedford. One of the nine counties of Bermuda was named after him .
On June 16, 1619, James Hamilton received the titles of Earl of Cambridge and Baron Innerdale, becoming a peer of England . In 1621, he was Lord High Commissioner in the Scottish Parliament . In the years 1623-1625 - Lord Steward of England. In 1623 he was awarded the Order of the Garter .
James Hamilton died on March 2, 1625 in Whitehall ( London ) from a fever. He was buried in the family mausoleum in Hamilton on September 2 of that year.

In 1603, he married Lady Ann Cunningham (d. 1646 ), daughter of James Cunningham (1552-1630), 7th Earl of Glenkern (1580-1630), and Margaret Campbell (? - 1610 ). Children:

He also had an illegitimate daughter Margaret (1625–1695) from a relationship with Anne Stewart (? - 1669 ), daughter of Walter Stewart (until 1565 - 1617), 1st Lord Blantyre . Margaret became the wife of John Hamilton (until 1624 - 1679), 1st Lord Belvechen and Stanton.
