Library History
The library reading room named after V. O. Klyuchevsky was founded on the initiative of Nikolai Andreyevich Shamin , a vowel of the Moscow City Council, a prominent public figure, chairman of the memorial society βOld Moscowβ. The idea of ββcreating a public library on the basis of a personal collection of books by Vasily Osipovich Klyuchevsky arose in 1911, shortly after the death of the largest Russian historian, to "perpetuate his memory." The library opened for readers on July 14, 1915 on the ground floor of house No. 18 on 2nd Rogozhskaya Street, now Bibliotekhnaya Street (the building has not been preserved).
From the first days, the library-reading room was popular among the population, although the book stock was only 3,500 copies, and by the end of 1917 - 5,000. The devastation of 1917-20 had a detrimental effect on the library. In 1918 , when moving to House No. 30 on Bolshaya Kommunisticheskaya Street (now Solzhenitsyn Street ), a large number of books were lost or stolen, and no new replenishment was made. However, already in the early 1920s , the situation was changing: the library was replenished through confiscated private collections of Stepanov, Krasavin, Derevitskaya, Solovyova, Morozov. A personal collection of books by Kuznetsov, the former owner of the mansion on Bol. Thanks to the intervention of N.K. Krupskaya, after the lengthy proceedings, the communist library, where the library moved, also replenished library funds. Organization of work is also being established: the reading room is reopening, a children's department appears, and a separate study is provided for scientific studies, where books were also delivered from other libraries if necessary.
In the Soviet years, the library was actively developing, under the name of another prominent Russian and Soviet historian Mikhail Nikolayevich Pokrovsky . So, in the early 1930s , no less than 5 book delivery tables for different categories of readers and a separate table for recording in the library were organized on the subscription. By the end of the 1930s. the music library opens with valuable antique clavors and the foreign branch. The reading room is expanding, consultation rooms, a room for lectures and reports are being organized. During these years, the library has been actively working with the illiterate population, organizing "movements" - mobile libraries in housing associations. There were consultations on self-education, reading, and, of course, active ideological work was carried out.
In March 1934, the children's department was allocated into an independent children's library, now the Central City Children's Library. A.P. Gaidar , ("Gaidarovka").
In 1976, due to the expansion of funds, the library moved from the mansion to Bol. Communist at its current address in a modern building. In 1979, by decision of the Zhdanov District Council, library No. 132 named after M.N. Pokrovsky became the Central District Library. Departments were opened: acquisition and processing of literature, stationary and non-stationary services, methodological and bibliographic, organization and use of a single fund and interlibrary loan, foreign literature and music. By order of the Department of Culture and Art of December 29, 1992, the library acquired the status of the Center for Russian Literature and Culture.
Finally, in 2011 the library was returned to its historical name - the Central Library named after V.O. Klyuchevsky. In memory of Klyuchevsky , the collection has preserved editions from his personal collection, including the Brockhaus and Efron encyclopedic dictionary of 1890-1905.
