Assel Century (from the name of the Assel River in the Southern Urals), also the Assel Stage , the first century of the Ural era , corresponding to the first lower level of the Ural Division of the Permian system according to Eastern European and Tetis stratigraphic scales. It was isolated by the Soviet geologist V.E. Ruzhentsev in 1954 from the lower part of the overlying Sakmarian stage. It began 299 ± 0.8 million years ago, lasted 6 million years.
It is underlain by the upper (Gzhel) tier of carbon , and is overlain by the Sakmarian tier.

The Assel tier is divided into the Holodnozhsky and Shihan horizons.
Paleogeography and climate
Assel Age Flora and Fauna
The Asselian stage is characterized by a complex of foraminifera and ammonites. On the western slope of the Urals, limestone prevails as a part of the Asselian sediments, the massive deposits of which are associated with oil deposits (Ishimbay). Deposits corresponding to the Assel tier are also allocated in the Donbass, Central Asia, the Pamirs, Austria, China, Japan and the USA.
