Biography

Second daughter of Sir James Hamilton ( 1606 - 1649 ), 3rd Marquis of Hamilton and 1st Duke of Hamilton, and Lady Margaret Fielding ( 1613 - 1638 ), daughter of William Fielding, 1st Earl of Denby, and Lady Susan Villiers, sister of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham .

Born in Whitehall Palace in London , where her mother served as a sleeping lady under Henriet Maria of France , wife of King Charles I Stuart .

In March 1649, after the execution of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton , his younger brother William Hamilton, Earl of Lanark , inherited his titles and possessions. In 1651, William Hamilton died from wounds received at the Battle of Worcester. In his will, drawn up in The Hague in 1650 , he provided for the niece Anna to become his heiress, bypassing the rights of his own daughters.

In September 1651, Anna Hamilton inherited the title of Duchess of Hamilton, as well as the Marquise Clydesdale , Countess Arran , Lanark and Cambridge .

Through her father, Anna Hamilton could lay claim to the royal throne of Scotland. Her ancestor, James Hamilton (c. 1415 - 1479 ), 1st Lord Hamilton ( 1445 - 1479 ), was married to Princess Mary of Scotland, daughter of King James II Stuart . Her great-great-grandfather James Hamilton (c. 1516 - 1575 ), 2nd Earl of Arran ( 1529 - 1575 ), was the heir to the throne after the death of John Stuart, Duke of Albany and before the birth of Jacob VI Stuart , and regent of Scotland during his childhood and stay in France Queen Mary Stuart .

In July 1698, Anna Hamilton renounced all his titles in favor of the English king Wilhelm of Orange , who, a month later, by decree to Het Loo ( Netherlands ) transferred all the titles to her eldest son James Hamilton , who became Duke of Hamilton , Marquis of Clydesdale, Earl of Arran, Lanark and Cambridge .

On October 17 ( 28 ), 1716 , 85-year-old Anna Hamilton died in her Hamilton family castle in Scotland.
