Fencing.
July 6, 1972 Gymnasium CSKA. Moscow, Komsomolsky Prospect.
Fencing pentathletes began at 9 am. Each athlete had to conduct 38 fights. The cost of the first victory is 82 points, all subsequent ones - 34 points each. The winner of 28 victories received the right to the cherished thousand. Each match lasts 3 minutes.
This fencing marathon lasted almost 8 hours. All athletes and team representatives noted the excellent organization of the competition. Having won in thirty fights and still in the interruption for the first place with Dinamo Yuri Togobetsky, soldier Pavel Lednev won the fencing. Both have the same amount of points - 1068. For Lednev - this is the seventh tournament of the season. All held at a high level. Stability is the result of high technical training, experience and desire to win.
During the fencing there were several conflict situations. In the battle between V. Dryukov and G. Frolenko, the latter won. However, the judge by mistake recorded the victory Dryukova. When they began to find out the truth about who won, Dryukov to the question: "Who won?", Firmly answered: "I" and then continued to stand firm. I had to interview witnesses ... Of course, they corrected the error, but the impression remained unpleasant. Shmelev fenced with E. Baroyan and inadvertently pricked the floor. The judge did not notice and counted the defeat to Baroyan. Shmelev took off his mask, apologized and said that the injection was on the floor (by the way, he lost this fight later). Ledneva mistakenly counted the victory over P. Gorlov. Lednev himself reported an error, although he needed a victory like air. Pyatibortsev called "knights of the five qualities." All have five qualities, the majority is endowed with chivalry, but someone also lacks it.
It is worth noting that of the 39 participants less than 700 points scored 23 people.

Horseback riding.
July 7, 1972 Station "Glider". Equestrian base "Glider" (DSO "Spartak"). The length of the track is 1000 meters.
A strange and rare situation has developed in the championship. Already after two types - fencing and riding - almost without risk can be called a future winner. This is the soldier Vladimir Shmelev. Having started in the second round on the North horse, he passed the route for 2.10.8, made two fells and eventually got 1030 points. After two kinds he has a very decent amount - 2030 points and no rivals nearby. No wonder they say that the lot is blind. After honoring all the leaders, they pulled out bad and, or you might say, not very well prepared horses and failed horse riding. Lednev brought 325 points to Ceston, Svatenko - 195, Onishchenko 635.

Shooting.
July 8, 1972 Shooting competitions were held at the shooting range in the suburban Mytischi.
In the championship, the third type of pentathlon is shooting, truly a reef underwater and treacherous. And it turned out that they almost lost the leaders. With Shmelev, for example, the following happened. In the warm-up suddenly went misfires. It turned out that the hammer had broken. They did not take a spare, and the experimental pistol and there is no second such striker at the firing line. Just a ridiculous situation and dramatic. Luckily in the shooting range, army shooters trained. They took the gun from Margolin's pistol, they immediately hewed it up, drove it, and Shmelev managed to reach the firing line with his weapon, but very worn out. The first series - 47, the second - 45, everything is heap but too high. The next two are 47. As a result, the sum is 186 (824 points). This of course is not brilliance. But given the margin of points in fencing and jumping, Shmelev remained the leader of the competition.
An even more ridiculous incident occurred in Onishchenko. In the first series, Boris threw a cartridge at reloading. Onishchenko had 7 seconds to think it over (the length of the pause between shots) and two ways to choose from. The first is to lay down a weapon and declare a misfire. Second = raise the cartridge, put it in the chamber and make a shot. Boris stooped and wanted to raise the cartridge. But that cartridge was slippery and inconveniently lay, while picked up, while charging, the target opened and closed ... Fortunately for Onishchenko, the judges, after long disputes, were given to finish the series. As a result, the series turned 49-46-49-50. 194 minus 2 points fine, and in the end 192 points.
Shooting competitions turned out to be very nervous, as the installations broke in the dash every now and then and had to wait a long time for them to be repaired. The young Oleg Bulgakov could not stand the strain, he had only 180 points and lost all chances for a prize.
1. V. Svatenko (Enbek) - 196 (1044 points)
