The XX USSR Championship in Modern Pentathlon was held in Moscow from July 17 to July 21, 1971. The championship was held as part of the V Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR .

Awards were awarded in the individual and team championships. The V Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR was the main competition of the sports season of 1971 in the USSR. Based on its results, a team was formed to participate in the 1971 World Cup in San Antonio ( USA ).
45 athletes - representatives of 15 teams: the Union republics, Moscow and Leningrad (the pentathletes of Moldova and Turkmenistan refused to participate) started.
