Shelby County ( eng. Shelby County ) is located in the United States , Tennessee . As of 2010 , the population was 927,644 people. It was founded on November 24 , 1819 , got its name in honor of the American politician and governor of the state of Virginia Isaac Shelby .

According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 2,030 km², of which 1,980 km² is land and 57 km², or 2.8% is water.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 897,472 inhabitants live in the district, consisting of 338,366 households and 228,735 families . The population density is 459.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the district there are 362 954 residential buildings, with a building density of about 186 buildings per km 2 . The racial composition of the population: whites - 48.56%, African Americans - 47.34%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.20%, Asians - 1.64%, Hawaiians - 0.04%, representatives of other races - 1.20 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.02%. Hispanic was 2.60% of the population, regardless of race .
In the composition of 34.20% of the total number of households live children under the age of 18 years, 42.80% of households are married couples living together, 20.10% of households are single women without a spouse, 32.40% of households households are not related to families , 27.00% of households consist of one person, 7.70% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.60 people, and the average family size is 3.18 people.
