Biography
Nikolai Romaniuk was born on May 9, 1922 in the village of Annovka (now - Ivanovsky District, Amur Region ). After graduating from elementary school, he lived and worked in Blagoveshchensk . In June 1941, Romanyuk was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since August of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He was wounded four times in battles [1] .
By June 1944, Sergeant Nikolai Romanyuk commanded a division of machine gunners of the 234th Infantry Regiment of the 179th Infantry Division of the 43rd Army of the 1st Baltic Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Vitebsk region of the Byelorussian SSR . On June 23, 1944, Romanyuk’s squad participated in the battles for the liberation of the settlements of Shumilino and Sirotino , destroying about 30 enemy soldiers and officers. On June 24, 1944, Romanov was among the first to cross the Western Dvina in the vicinity of the village of Vyazhishche (now Budilovo, Beshenkovichi District ) and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead. In those battles, Romanyuk was wounded, but continued to fight, repelling a large number of German counterattacks. On June 26, 1944, Romanyuk’s squad cut the Vitebsk - Beshenkovichi highway, destroying 52 motor vehicles, about 50 enemy soldiers and officers, and captured more than 20 [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 22, 1944, for “exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command and the courage and heroism shown at the same time”, Sergeant Nikolai Romaniuk was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal [1] .
In 1946, Romanyuk was demobilized. He lived and worked in Blagoveshchensk . He died on October 10, 1995 [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and a number of medals [1] .
