Biography
Alexey Romanenko was born on March 20, 1924 in the village of Krupyanka [1] [2] .
After finishing seven classes of the school, he worked as an accountant and a plowman on a collective farm , was elected secretary of the Komsomol cell [1] .
In August 1942, Romanenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army [3] and entered the battle on the Voronezh Front [1] .
By September 1943, Junior Sergeant Aleksey Romanenko was in command of the motorized rifle battalion of the 69th Mechanized Brigade of the 9th Mechanized Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On September 22, 1943, Romanenko’s branch crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Zarubintsy of the Kanevsky district of the Cherkasy region of the Ukrainian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore, repelling a large number of German counterattacks [3] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 17, 1943, Junior Sergeant Alexei Romanenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union [1] [3] .
In February 1944, Romanenko went missing [3] (according to other sources, he died in battle) [1] .
