Writer is a free analogue of proprietary Microsoft Word . Writer also has some features not found in Word, for example [1] , support for page styles.
Writer allows you to save documents in various formats, including Microsoft Word , RTF , XHTML , PDF, and the OASIS Open Document Format , which is the default format used since OpenOffice.org 2.0, as well as in the format of previous versions of Writer (including the version SO Writer 5.2). Writer also allows you to export to the MediaWiki format (in versions 3.0 and higher, using an optional install extension). At the same time, it allows you to import Corel WordPerfect ( WDP ), 602 Document ( .602 ), WPS Word ( WPS ) documents, files of some formats of mobile word processors on PocketPC and Palm platforms and some others.
The list of supported formats and the quality of export / import are constantly improving (example: support for the 602 Document format appeared in version 2.2.1).
Like all programs included with OpenOffice.org, Writer can be run on many different operating systems, including Linux , Mac OS X , FreeBSD, and Microsoft Windows.
In addition, there is a special version of OpenOffice.org Writer Portable (part of OpenOffice.org Portable ) that can be used without installation, which allows you to run it, for example, from a flash drive .
Supported file formats
OpenOffice uses ISO / IEC 26300: 2006 [2] OpenDocument as its native format. OpenOffice versions 2.0-2.3.0 used ODF 1.0 by default, versions 2.3.1-2.4.3 used ODF 1.1.
Prior to version 1.x, OpenOffice used OpenOffice.org XML . This helped OASIS develop OpenDocument [3] [4] based on it.
OpenOffice also claims support for the following formats [5] [6] :

Extensions for OpenOffice.org Writer
Starting with version 2.0.4, OpenOffice.org supports XUL extensions in .oxt format, which are easy to add, similar to how it is organized in Mozilla Firefox .
The most interesting and fairly popular extensions for Writer:
- CompPad - allows you to do mathematical and engineering calculations in the form of entering mathematical expressions using the equation editor (see also Math ) [10] .
- Language Tool - an extension for checking grammar. Implemented the ability to check for Russian, English, German, Polish and other languages [11] .
- Typography for LLC - extension allows you to bring the text in line with typographic standards (quotation marks, dashes, extra spaces) [12] .
- AltSearch - an extension to improve search and replace text options, supports regular expressions [13] .
These and many other extensions can be found on the official website [14] .
Criticism
- Unlike editors such as Microsoft Word and Abiword , Writer does not have a grammar check, although there is a spell check [15] . To enable grammar checking, you need to install a special extension [16] .
- The ability to work with e-mail, which was completely rewritten in version 2.0, is still less stable and expandable compared to other word processors.
- Writer’s “cold start” time is longer than other word processors. It is often claimed that Writer performance is lower than that of Word, but various tests show that their speed is approximately equal [17] .
