Biography
His father, Nikolai Guzelyov, a gardener by profession, played excellently on the violin. Mother, Elizabeth, was a seamstress, but in her youth she played in amateur theaters. Interest in the opera was aroused by the future singer at the age of 15 when he heard on radio Boris Boris Mussorgsky’s monologue from the opera Boris Godunov performed by Edmond Kosowski.
He studied painting at the Bulgarian National Academy of Arts, in 1954 he entered the Academy of the National Opera of Sofia. In 1955, he began to practice vocal with the famous opera tenor Elijah Yosifov , and since 1960 with the baritone Kristo Brambarov . From 1960 he was a trainee, from 1961 he was a permanent artist at the People’s Opera, where he made his debut on June 27, 1961 as Timur in Purandi’s opera Turandot. The singer focused on the Russian and Italian repertoire in his work. During his career, which lasted more than 50 years, he played more than 70 roles, including the role of Pimen in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, thanks to which he received international recognition in 1963.
In 1962 he was awarded a gold medal at the International Youth Festival in Helsinki, and the next year - the first prize and a gold medal at the II International Competition of Young Opera Singers in Sofia for the role of Philip II in Don Carlos. In 1963, the international debut in Barcelona followed, followed by a tour with the Sofia Opera Ensemble in Western Europe.
In 1966, he performed with great success at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He has performed at the Berlin State Opera, at the La Scala Theater in Milan, at the Vienna State Opera and at the London Covent Garden Theater. In 1968, on the stage of the Reggio Theater in Parma, he achieved great success with the role of Attila from Verdi's opera of the same name.
Among the recorded recordings are Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich , Mussorgsky’s “ Boris Godunov ”, conducted by Claudio Abbado , Offenbach’s “ Tales of Hoffmann, ” directed by Andre Kluitens and others.
In 1994, Parma received the Golden Verdi Award. Among the awards are the Order of Cyril and Methodius, First Degree, the Order of Stara Planina, First Degree, the Dimitrov Prize, the Golden Lira, Golden Pen, Commander of the Republic of Italy and others.
