Biography

Born on September 30, 1913 in the village of Kustolovo-Sukhodolka, now in the Mashevsky district of the Poltava region, in a peasant family. Ukrainian. He graduated from six classes. He worked as a fitter at a plant in the city of Dneprodzerzhinsk .

In 1936, drafted into the ranks of the Red Army . Member of the liberation campaign of Soviet troops in Western Ukraine and Western Belarus in 1939. In 1940 he graduated from the Kherson Military Infantry School. In the battles of World War II from March 1942. He fought on the Western, Southern, 3rd Ukrainian , 4th Ukrainian and 1st Belorussian fronts. He was twice wounded.

At the beginning of 1945, the troops of the 1st Belorussian Front carried out successful offensive operations in Poland . On January 20, 1945, a battalion under the command of Major I. Ya. Cherednik distinguished himself in battles for the settlements of Nagurno and Kolo in Poland . The enemy met our warriors with fierce fire. The tanks and the self-propelled guns division, which were supposed to support the battalion, were behind. The mortar division advancing behind the rifle divisions did not manage to take up positions. Despite this, the fighters of I. Ya. Cherednik resolutely attacked the enemy in the first trench and inflicted significant losses on him. Towards evening, the battalion approached the eastern outskirts of Nagurno and, as a result of a three-hour battle, took control of the village. Skillfully using the given means of support, after a short artillery preparation, the battalion again attacked the Nazis, overcame three defense trenches, an anti-tank ditch, wire fences and blocked eight pillboxes and two bunkers. The strong point Kolo was taken. The commander was always in battle formations, skillfully organizing the interaction of units, and by personal example he inspired fighters for feats of arms. In this battle, the battalion destroyed and captured about 900 enemy soldiers and officers.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the skillful command of the battalion and the courage and bravery shown to Major Ivan Yakovlevich Cherednik, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .

Since 1946, Lieutenant Colonel I. Ya. Cherednik is in stock. He lived in Kiev. He died on May 22, 1955. He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery.
