Biography

Lennart was born on May 8, 1909 in the Royal Palace of Stockholm. He was the only son of Prince William of Sweden and his wife Maria Pavlovna.

In 1912, parents went on a journey east, leaving their son at home. Shortly after returning, in 1913, they parted, and mother returned to Russia. The next time Lennart saw her only eight years later. Father no longer married.

At the age of 22, the prince married commoner Karin Nisswandt. For this, he was stripped of his titles, and only Lennart Bernadotte had the right to be called. Only in 1951, the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Charlotte granted him the title of Earl of Wiesborg. Karin had four children. The marriage ended in divorce in 1972. A few months later, Lennart married a second time to Sonya Haunts , who gave him five children.

William of Sweden inherited from his father the island of Mainau on Lake Constance . Lennart liked to spend his free time there, and later created a botanical garden. Now the island is one of the tourist attractions.

The last years of his life, Lennart suffered from emphysema. He died at the age of 95 on the island of Mainau .
