Getting

  • Passing chlorine through a suspension of decacarbonyldimanganese in carbon tetrachloride :
Mn2(CO)10+Cl2→0oC2Mn(CO)5Cl{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Mn_ {2} (CO) _ {10} + Cl_ {2} \ {\ xrightarrow {0 ^ {o} C}} \ 2Mn (CO) _ {5} Cl}}}

Physical Properties

Chloro (pentacarbonyl) manganese forms light yellow crystals.

It is not soluble in petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride, soluble in benzene , chloroform and acetone .

Chemical Properties

  • When heated, dimerizes:
2Mn(CO)5Cl→60oC[Mn(CO)fourCl]2+2CO{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2Mn (CO) _ {5} Cl \ {\ xrightarrow {60 ^ {o} C}} \ [Mn (CO) _ {4} Cl] _ {2} + 2CO}}}
