Koebler, Gerhard

Koebler was born and raised in the Bavarian city of Fürth in the family of an employee. Since 1959, studies law, economics and sociology at the universities of Erlangen and Göttingen . In 1962 in Celle he passed the first state exam, and two years later he defended his thesis on the topic “Civis and Ius civile in the German early Middle Ages”. In 1967, passed the second exam in Munich .

In 1969, Köbler defended his doctoral thesis on the topic “Right in the Early Middle Ages” at the University of Gottingen. A year later, he became a teacher at this university, also being engaged in teaching activities in Marburg , Hamburg , Munich and Berlin . In 1972, Köbler became a professor at the University of Göttingen. In 1975 he was invited to the University of Giessen and Innsbruck .

Gerhard Köbler is co-publisher of Zeitschrift für Rechtsgeschichte and is the author of 15 legal dictionaries. His main areas of work are the history of law and historical linguistics. Of great importance is the Historical Dictionary of German Lands published by him in 2007 ( Historische Lexikon der deutschen Länder ).
