Biography
The youngest (second) son of James Douglas ( 1646 - 1700 ), 2nd Marquis of Douglas ( 1660 - 1700 ), from his second marriage to Mary Kerr (d. 1736 ).
His older brother William ( 1693 - 1694 ), died in infancy, after which Archibald received the title of Earl of Angus.
In February 1700, after the death of his father, Archibald Douglas inherited the title and possession of the Marquis of Douglas. April 10, 1703 received the ducal title. He wore the titles: Duke of Douglas, Marquis of Douglas and Abernathy , Viscount Jedborough and Lord Douglas of Bonkil , Preston and Roberton .
The holder of the Scottish royal crown on special occasions, transferred it to Edinburgh Castle after the closing of the last Scottish Parliament.
In 1715, during the Jacobite uprising in Scotland, Archibald Douglas, Duke of Douglas, supported the Hanover dynasty and brought to the aid of the British army of equestrian volunteers and participated in the Battle of Sheriffmoor .
In adulthood, Archibald Douglas was an eccentric character and was probably crazy. In 1725, he killed Captain John Kerr (the illegitimate son of his uncle, Lord Mark Kerr) in the castle of Douglas , where he invited him, and was forced to flee to Holland for a while.
In 1745, his residence - Douglas Castle - was burned down by the Scottish Highlanders during the new Jacobite revolt.
He had a falling out with his sister, Lady Jane Douglas, upon learning of her secret marriage to John Stuart of Grentulli, and was very cruel to her. In 1755, Douglas Castle burned down and the Duke hired Scottish architect Robert Adam to rebuild his ancestral residence. The work was not completed due to the death of the duke himself.
Family
The Duke March 1, 1758 married Margaret Douglas (? - October 24, 1774 ), the daughter of James Douglas of Mines (d. 1743 ) and Isabelle Corbet. The marriage was childless.
Being childless, Archibald Douglas bequeathed his possessions to his nephew, Baron Archibald Douglas ( 1748 - 1827 ), the son of his sister Jane Douglas ( 1698 - 1753 ) and Sir John Stewart ( 1687 - 1764 ).
On July 21, 1761, the 66-year-old Archibald Douglas, Marquis and Duke of Douglas, passed away in Edinburgh . Despite his testament in favor of the nephew of Archibald Douglas, the title of Marquis of Douglas was inherited by his distant relative, James George Hamilton ( 1755 - 1769 ), the 7th Duke of Hamilton and the 4th Duke of Brandon (1758-1769).
