Incidents

  • On June 12, 1965, at 10.05 Moscow time, at 89 km of the Vitebsk direction, due to criminal negligence of the duty officer at the Novinka station, a passenger train No. 12 Kiev - Leningrad collided with a freight train. Five people died as a result of the crash: four members of the locomotive crews and a twelve-year-old passenger of train No. 12. A greater number of victims were avoided thanks to the competent actions of the drivers and their assistants, who, in a situation where it was no longer possible to avoid the accident, and having the opportunity to leave locomotives remained in their places to the end and did everything possible to reduce speed and thereby minimize the consequences of a collision. At the scene of the disaster, at a distance of about 120 meters north of the stopping point 90 km, in the same year an obelisk was erected in memory of the victims. On August 31, 2006, a new monument was unveiled at the site of the dilapidated first obelisk. The Council of Veterans of the locomotive depot St. Petersburg-sorting — Vitebsky proposed renaming the stop point 90 kilometers into the platform “Memory of courage” - in honor of the feat of members of the locomotive train brigades, who had completely fulfilled their professional and human duty.
