Biography

Gottlieb Bodmer was born in Swiss Hombrechtikon and grew up in Feldkirchen near Munich. From the age of 16 he studied at the Munich Academy of Arts in the direction of “historical painting”. For several years he practiced portraiture under the guidance of Joseph Karl Stieler , in 1829 he moved to the workshop of Franz Xaver Winterhalter to do lithography. The most famous work of Bodmer of that time was the lithography of the Sistine Madonna .

Gottlieb Bodmer spent some time in Paris, where he improved in technology. He made numerous copies of engravings, especially fond of reproductions of paintings by artists of the Munich school. The most famous were the “Farewell of King Otto ” by Philip von Foltz , “King Ludwig I with his family” by Dietrich Montaigne , and the Swiss Grenadier by Johann Baptist Kirner . Gottlieb Bodmer's achievements in lithography marked the beginning of the Bavarian lithographic school, which brought Munich the fame of the “lithographic capital of Germany”.

Buried in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich.
