About the album
Hymns was the first album recorded in a professional studio. Godflesh also recorded drums for the first time live in the studio, with Ted Parsons as the drummer [1] . Parsons later stated that the label insisted on recording in a professional studio [2] . The final song of the album "Jesu" became the title of Justin Broadrick's next project after he dissolved Godflesh in April 2002.
Justin Broadrick said that Hymns was a reaction to their previous album , Us and Them , which he “absolutely damned hated” because on this album “he simply lost sight of what Godflesh should be like” [1] . Unlike Us and Them , Broadrick described Hymns as a “new beginning”:
| On this album it feels like a new beginning for the band. We are very pleased that Ted Parsons worked with us in the studio. Unlike previous albums, Ted recorded with us live in the studio ... In addition, this album was recorded in a professional studio, and not in our own studio. It was a huge studio with a lot of people helping us get the sound we wanted. It was a great experience for us ... [1] |
