Early life, education, and priesthood
Luigi Poggi was born on November 25, 1917 in Piacenza, Italy . He was educated at the college of Alberoni, Piacenza , as well as at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum " S. Apollinare "; ( doctorate in utroque iuris ). The doctor is both right . He was ordained a priest on July 28, 1940 . Pastoral ministry in the diocese of Piacenza in 1940-1942. After all his studies before the priestly ordination in Piacenza, he was sent to Rome in 1942 primarily to study diplomacy at the Pontifical Church Academy .
At the Holy See Diplomatic Service
In doing all this, Poggi entered the service of the State Secretariat of the Holy See , where he worked for the next twenty years. He subsequently advanced to become the Court Prelate of Pope John XXIII in 1960 . Poggi was responsible for the mission of researching the legal status of titular churches in Tunisia during 1963 and 1964 [ what? ] .
Papal Nuncio
On April 3, 1965, he was appointed apostolic delegate to Central Africa (which includes the modern states of Cameroon , Chad , Congo - Brazzaville , Gabon, and the Central African Republic ). Poggi also became the titular archbishop of Forontoniana. The ordination took place on May 9, 1965 , in the Basilica of San Carlo al Corso, in Rome , it was held by Cardinal Amleto Giovanni Cicognani , Cardinal Bishop with the title of Suburbic Diocese of Frascati - assisted by the Secretary of State of the Vatican , accompanied by Antonio Zamora - Titular Archbishop , Secretary of the Holy Congregation for Extraordinary Church Affairs and Umberto Malkiodi, Archbishop - Bishop of Piacenza. Poggi and the Vatican's Eastern Policy

This role reached its highest importance at the beginning of the pontificate of Pope John Paul II , when Poggi, due to his knowledge of Polish politics at that time, was first sent to Warsaw and then to the Kremlin to negotiate with Moscow . Critics of John Paul II saw his sending Poggi to the Eastern Bloc as an effort by the pope to govern and dictate Lech Walesa's resistance policy to the military government of Wojciech Jaruzelski .
