Battle of Iquique

Battle map

The Battle of Iquique ( Spanish: Combate de Iquique ) is a naval battle held on May 21, 1879 during the Second Pacific War between the fleets of Peru and Chile : the Peruvian battleship Huáscar under the command of Miguel Grau Seminario and the Chilean wooden corvette Esmeralda under the command of Arturo Prat Chacon , who died in battle. The result of the battle was the sinking of the Chilean corvette and the lifting of the blockade from the Peruvian port of Iquique .

While in Chilean historiography this battle is seen as a separate naval battle at Iquique ( Spanish: Combate naval de Iquique ), in historiography of Peru it is called the “battle at Iquique” and is considered part of the battle at Punta Gres, which also includes the battle between Chilean the schooner Covadonga and the Peruvian battleship Independencia , during which the Peruvian ship boarded the reefs.
