History
The 13-mm large-caliber cartridge was created by the company Polte from Magdeburg for a new class rifle ( PTR ), designed to counter the British tanks that appeared closer to the end of the war. Since conventional artillery and mines were inconvenient to deal with such moving targets, a large-caliber rifle was designed for a special powerful cartridge that can penetrate 20-mm armor plates. The cartridge served as an example for Americans who built a .50 BMG (which resembled an enlarged .30-06 ). The Americans did not want to completely copy the German 13 mm T-Gewehr patrone due to the presence of a protruding flange, which creates problems for automatic weapons. [one]
In the 30s, the Germans used the rifle and cartridge for testing when testing new designs of phosphorus incendiary, armor-piercing incendiary and other large-caliber special-purpose bullets.
