History
Freedom Square was one of the first sections where the new city of Stavropol began to be built. Initial architectural projects included the placement of the Pushkin Square and the adjacent Pushkin Boulevard in this place, but later the idea of the Komsomol members who built it was proposed to put in the center of the new square the obelisk “Fighters for Freedom” (now the Obelisk of Glory in Tolyatti ) in honor of fellow heroes, so the square was called Freedom Square, and instead of Pushkinsky Boulevard it became Youth. In honor of Pushkin, a small street remained, which borders the area on the southeast side.
The ensemble of Freedom Square consisted of several buildings constructed according to projects in the style of Stalinist classicism :
- The House of Culture, now the Pilgrim Puppet Theater, initially with 400 seats, expanded to 500 seats (1958, architect Sharonov)
- The Stavropol City Executive Committee, now the city hall of the Togliatti city district (1955-59, built by construction department No. 3, adopted by the State Commission on July 25, 1959)
- Administration of the Stavropol region (1957-58, the Lengiprogor project, simplified by the Kuibyshev branch of the Saratovgiprogorselstroy)
- The building of the Kuibyshev branch of "Saratovgiprogorselstroy"
- residential buildings (1958-59)
