The championship was remembered by two world records sponsored by Julia Pechenkina and Gulnara Samitova . In the 400 meters race with Pechenkin’s hurdles, in the absence of any competition (the silver medalist lost almost 4 seconds), she ran a distance of 52.34, which turned out to be 0.27 seconds faster than the American achievement Kim Batten of 8 years ago [1] .

Samitova set a new world record in the youngest track and field athletics discipline - running 3000 meters with obstacles (for the first time it will be included in the program of world championships only in 2005 ). Despite the fast start (the first kilometer - 2.54), Gulnara managed to add speed to the finish line and surpassed the previous world achievement by more than 8 seconds - 9.08.33 [2] . In the same race, the silver medalist of the championship, Lyubov Ivanova , set a new European record among youth (under 23 years old) - 9.24.78.

With the best result of the season in the world, Tatyana Shikolenko excelled at 66.00 m in the women's javelin throwing sector.

The outcome of the women's pole vault tournament was unexpected. The champion title was won by Elena Belyakova , who left behind two world record holders: the winter one, Svetlana Feofanova , and the summer one, Elena Isinbaeva [2] .

Heavy rain had an impact on a number of disciplines. Because of him, in particular, Marina Kuptsova and Anna Chicherova were forced to stop the women's high jump competition. The best in the attempts made was Kuptsova [2] .

Throughout 2003, Russian championships were held in various cities in individual athletics disciplines:

  • February 21–23 - Russian winter long throwing championship ( Adler )

50 km and 100 km Russian Championships

The Russian Championship in running 50 and 100 kilometers was held on April 19 in the city of Chernogolovka near Moscow at the same time as the European Championship . 250 athletes from 16 countries of the continent took part in the races. Among men, the first at the finish line with a track record (6: 28.27) was Farit Ganiev - he was declared the champion of Russia, but another Russian, Grigory Murzin , got the European title. This situation arose because Ganiev was not declared for the national team in the classification of the European Championship. There was no such problem in the women's race, and Tatyana Zhirkova officially became the best both in the country and on the continent with a new European record - 7: 19.51 [8] [9] .

Russian All-Around and 10,000-meter Running Championships

The 2003 Russian Championship in 10,000 meters running and all-around disciplines was held on August 2-3 in Tula . Competitions were held at the Arsenal stadium. Due to various reasons, the leaders of the national team, Lev Lobodin and the current world champion Elena Prokhorova, did not take part in the medal competition in the all-around competitions. Lobodin missed the championship due to injury, and Prokhorova completed the fight after four types, referring to an individual training plan [16] . In the 10,000-meter run, the first finish line was crossed by Ukrainian Yevgeny Bozhko (28.44.99), and the title of champion of the country went to Dmitry Maximov who came next. The championship was crowned by a women's run at a similar distance, in which all three winners “ran out” of 31 minutes, and Galina Bogomolova set a new Russian record - 30.46.48. Olga Bondarenko’s previous record of 17 years ago (30.57.21) was also exceeded by silver medalist, Alla Zhilyaeva [17] .
