He is known as one of the founders of the theory of semigroups of operators (in particular, the Hille-Yosid theorem on the generator of C 0 -semi-groups of compression) [1] , as well as the author of a functional analysis textbook translated into many languages of the world [2] . Member of the Japanese Academy of Sciences (1971), foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1982) [3] .
