List of England head coach

Gareth Southgate , current head coach of the England national football team

This article provides a list of England’s national football team head coaches , starting with the first coach Walter Winterbottom , who took office in May 1947 immediately after its establishment [1] [2] . Prior to the establishment of the head coach position, the team was headed by the International Selection Committee [2] , which included the Football Association of England , but who at the same time made the final decisions on putting the players to matches [3] . The position of coach was established by the Secretary of the Football Association, Sir Stanley Rose, after England lost 1-0 to Switzerland . Winterbottom, who served as national director of coaching, became the head coach of the England team [1] [4] .

From that moment on, 17 people visited the position of head coach of the England national football team, four of them were acting head coach: Joe Mercer (7 matches), Howard Wilkinson (2 matches with an interval of one year), Peter Taylor (one match) and Stuart Pierce (one match). In terms of the total time spent in the position of head coach, the first place is taken by Winterbottom, who spent about 16 years in the rank of national team coach, leading it in 139 matches and taking part in four world championships with her. The only coach to win a major international tournament with the England team is Alf Ramsey , the coach of the 1966 World Champions [5] . Two more coaches made it to the semifinals of major tournaments: Bobby Robson at the 1990 World Cup and Terry Venables at the 1996 European Championship .

In 2001, for the first time in the history of the England national team, a foreigner became a coach: Sven-Joran Ericsson came to this position, despite public objections [6] [7] . With him, the England team went to the quarter finals of the 2002 and 2006 world championships and the 2004 European championship three times. The second foreigner was Fabio Capello , who replaced Steve McLaren , who was fired after England missed the 2008 European Championships . Capello and his team at the 2010 World Cup stopped at the 1/8 final stage, but the Football Association decided to extend the contract with Capello [8] . Capello left the national team in February 2012 in protest that John Terry was deprived of the captain's armband [9] , and his duties were performed until May 2012 by Stuart Pearce [10] , until Roy Hodgson became a coach [11] . Hodgson left the national team on June 27, 2016 after losing to the Icelandic national team with a score of 1: 2 in the 1/8 finals of the European Championship in France [12] . Hodgson's successor was Sam Allardyes a month later [13] , but spent only one match as a national team coach and left after corruption charges [14] . Since November 30, 2016, the coach is Gareth Southgate, who has already managed to play 4 games as the acting coach [15] .

Persons in the position of head coach of the England national football team were often attacked by the press: in some cases, journalists did not hesitate to discuss the personal lives of the coaches [16] [17] . Due to the high importance of this work and the high level of expectations from football fans, the work of the national team coach is often called “impossible” and “unbearable” [3] [18] . According to British citizens, the importance of the work of the head coach of the football team is not inferior to the importance of the activities of the Prime Minister of Great Britain [19] [20] .

Activities

Coach Responsibilities

Fabio Capello , working in the England team, invited only one Englishman to the coaching staff

The position of coach of the England national football team suggests that those holding such a position will be fully responsible for what is happening on the field, including for the actions of the players. His responsibilities include selecting players, setting the starting lineup, appointing a captain, determining tactics for the match, making substitutions during the match, and selecting penalties for penalties. Until 1946, there was a Selection Committee, whose members performed all of the above duties. However, the actions of the coaches were influenced from outside (and not only from the Football Association of England): in England, the economy of which was destroyed by the Second World War, the coach had to determine the place of residence of the players (hotel), training fields, and also agree on travel conditions up to the diet of players.

England coach is given freedom of choice in the formation of the coaching staff. So, in 2008, Fabio Capello introduced four Italians to the headquarters: Franco Baldini (head coach), Italo Galbyati (assistant coach), Franco Tancredi (goalkeeper coach) and Massimo Neri (fitness instructor) [21] . However, in order not to violate the terms of his contract, according to which at least one Englishman should be in the coaching staff, Capello also appointed Stuart Pearce , coach of the England youth team, to the coaching staff [22] .

An English national team coach has the moral right to discuss national affairs not directly related to matches, as well as consult with the Football Association and give her advice on arranging the infrastructure necessary for training national team players in qualifying tournaments [23] . The coach can also give recommendations on the conduct of matches: for example, Capello specially trained at the Wembley Stadium , the boys who put the balls in, quickly throw them to the players [24] .

Purpose

The process of appointing the head coach of the England team is carried out by the committee of the Football Association of England, which includes all members of the leadership. So, the committee that appointed Sven-Joran Ericsson included: executive director Adam Kreutzer, chairman Jeffrey Thompson , vice president Dave Richards, president of the club association David Dane, member of the management Peter Riesdale and technical director Howard Wilkinson [25] .

All 15 coaches who led the team were professional footballers in the past, but out of 13 English coaches, only 8 played at least one match for the team. Winterbottom, Greenwood, Wilkinson, Graham Taylor and Maclaren were not called up to the national team. Four coaches who played in the national team played a relatively large number of games for the “three lions”: 20 games on the account of Robson [26] , 32 - Ramsey [27] , 53 - Hoddle [28] and 63 - Keegan [29] . Ramsey and Keegan were captains of the team, having played in captains 3 and 31 matches, respectively [30] . Fabio Capello, an Italian coach, also played 32 games for the Italian national team [31] .

Value

The activities of the England national team coach are considered no less important in the country than the activities of the Prime Minister [19] , since in the country, which is traditionally considered the birthplace of football, they carefully select players and coaches, and they root for the national team with special enthusiasm [32] . The appointment and dismissal of the coach is the subject of discussion on the front pages of newspapers and magazines [33] , in the offices bets are made on the appointment of coaches, determination of the composition and outcomes of matches involving the national team [34] , and during the tournament fans are actively buying out the attributes of the national team (during the championship world 2006, 27% of the adult population bought up flags in a month) [35] . During the matches, most shops and offices [36] even stop working, and some workers even ask them to let them go early in order to catch the start of the match [37] .

The activities of the England national team coach are complicated by his dependence on club coaches, who have every right to deny players the right to leave for the national team. Conflicts called “club against the country” often occur in the country in this case [38] . In their defense, the coaches declare that a player who has to play a maximum of 38 games only in the championship of England may not be ready at all for the start of a major tournament in the summer, if it starts, and the Premier League is not interested in facilitating the fate of players calling for the national team, and a subsequent decrease in the number of games [39] . In England, there was even a scandal over the proposal to hold the 39th round of the Premier League outside the country. The combination of these factors and the coach’s responsibility for the result makes his work, according to journalists, “unbearable” [3] .

History

Education as national team coach. The Age of Walter Winterbottom (1946-1962)

Until 1946, the leadership of the England national football team was carried out by one of the representatives of the Football Association of England and one of the representatives of the London Athletics Club. [40] . In 1946, Walter Winterbott, the former member of the Football Association International Selection Committee , which was involved in the selection of players, became the sole coach of the England national team. The role of Winterbottom, however, then came down only to the choice of the starting lineup and tactics [2] . The very first game of Winterbottom as part of the Home Championship of Great Britain of the 1946/1947 season against the Irish national team ended in a victory for the British with a score of 7: 2 (the match was held in Belfast at the Windsor Park stadium) [41] . In 1950, the England team won the Home Championship and qualified for the World Cup in Brazil , but did not leave the group, having suffered a sensational defeat from the Americans 1-0 [42] and then losing the match to the Spaniards with the same score [41] .

The second major failure of Winterbottom was the game against Hungary at Wembley , in which the Hungarian team defeated the head of the British with a score of 6: 3. Winterbottom talked about this match: “The press made us think that we would win easily, but I tried to explain that the Hungarians were really a great team” [43] . England won the Home Championship in 1954 and went to the World Cup in Switzerland , but again she was unsuccessful - Uruguay won the quarterfinal match with a score of 4: 2 [41] . England, having passed the qualifying tournament for the 1958 World Cup , soon suffered another failure: in an additional match of the playoffs, the British were defeated by the USSR national team with a score of 1-0 [44] . However, Winterbottom did not leave his post. He had to leave the position of head coach only after the World Cup of 1962 , when the British lost to the Brazilians in the quarterfinals, and the British press simply crushed Winterbottom [45] . He left his post five months after the end of the world championship in Chile and still remains the British record holder for the duration of his tenure as head coach of the national team (16 years) [41] .

The era of Alpha Ramsey (1962-1974). Home World Championship victory

Alf Ramsey - Head Coach of the 1966 World Cup

Alf Ramsay took over the leadership of the team in 1962 after the departure of Walter Winterbottom [46] . Unlike his predecessor, Ramsay had experience working with clubs as a coach at Ipswich Town , who won the English Championship in the First Division of the Football League [47] . Having taken up duties, Alf Ramsey vowed to do everything so that England would win its next World Cup , the final part of which took place in the homeland of football - in England [48] . The very first game of Ramsay ended in embarrassment: the British lost to France with a score of 5: 2 at Parc de Princes [49] . Nevertheless, the founders of football at the home world championship did not allow themselves such oversights: at the tournament they played all once in a draw with Uruguay (0: 0), after which they won four meetings in a row and reached the final , where the German team was waiting for them. In the final, the British in overtime pulled out a 4-2 victory, and Jeffrey Hurst scored a hat-trick. Ramsay fulfilled this promise, for which in 1967 the Queen of Great Britain Elizabeth II knighted him. At the 1968 European Championships held in Italy , the England team became the third, but Ramsay calmly declared: “We are world champions. Third place is not our real place in football ” [50] .

World champions automatically qualified for the next championship, and England thereby without qualification got to the 1970 World Cup . Before the tournament, Ramsay organized a tour of the England national team in South America, and soon for the first time in history he included a doctor, Dr. Neil Phillips, who participated in the preparation of the squad for the tournament in Mexico. England at that tournament in the quarter finals lost the German team with a score of 3: 2 in overtime, although it led 2-0 after 25 minutes. Fatal decisions that affected the course of the game were replacing striker Bobby Charlton and goalkeeper Martin Peters [51] , for which Ramsay was subjected to a flurry of criticism from the British press [52] . In the quarterfinals of the 1972 European Championship , which was then only part of the qualification, and not the final tournament, England again came to Germany and again lost to her in the sum of two meetings. Ramsay prepared the team in the future for the 1974 World Cup , but in the match against the Polish national team , which had to be won, errors in substitutions led only to a 1-1 draw, because of which England missed the World Cup [53] . After this failure, in May 1974, Ramsay was fired [52] .

Troubled Times (1974-1982)

Joe Mercer was the acting head coach of the England national team for 7 matches [54] , after which Don Revy , who signed a contract for 5 years, became the England team mentor. Not even a year had passed before England was defeated for the first time under the leadership of Revie, but despite this, each time he put up a different starting line-up for matches. His strange physical training exercises - carpet bowling and indoor golf - led to the collapse of the team, which did not make it to the 1976 European Championships and the 1978 World Championships. At Wembley , the Dutch team beat the English 2-0, and from that moment the press began to criticize Revi actively, and after the game the commentators even recalled to him the defeat of England from Hungary 6-3, which the British suffered in 1953. Soon, Revi announced his resignation and retirement from the UAE national team , leaving the national team on July 11, 1977 and having had time to give an interview to the Daily Mail . Revie was accused of undermining the reputation of football and was disqualified for 10 years by decision of the Football Association of England , but after the appeal, disqualification was replaced by a fine of two-thirds of the amount that Revi received under the contract [55] .

In 1977, Brian Clough was the candidate for national team coach, but the Football Association rejected his candidacy [56] , appointing Ron Greenwood first on a temporary basis and then on a regular basis as the successor to Revi. Bobby Moore called Greenwood the “encyclopedia of football” ( Encyclopaedia of football ), and the new coach led the English national team to the 1980 European Championship without losing once in qualifying for the tournament [57] [58] , but the team left the tournament after the group stage. Greenwood continued to lead the team in qualifying for the 1982 World Cup in Spain . After the defeats from Switzerland and Romania, there were rumors about the resignation of Greenwood, which were dispelled by the victory over Hungary [57] , but the British were faced with yet another trouble in qualifying - in Oslo, the British lost to the Norwegians with a score of 2: 1, and even NRK broadcaster commentator Björge Lillelien on the mix English and Norwegian cried out in a fit of emotion, turning to Margaret Thatcher : “We hellishly beat your boys!” ( Eng. Your boys took a hell of a beating! ). England needed to achieve at least a draw in the last match against Hungary, and only Paul Mariner's goal brought victory to the British and a trip to the World Cup [59] . In the final tournament, England easily won the first group stage, having overcome France , Czechoslovakia and Kuwait , but in the second group stage two zero draws knocked England out of the further struggle. England left the tournament without losing a single match [58] . On July 7, 1982, two days after the last match of the English, Greenwood left the post of coach, losing him to Bobby Robson , who appointed Don Howe as his assistant [60] .

Bobby Robson and the Hand of God (1982-1990)

Bobby Robson, head coach of England in 1982-1990

Robson played 28 games of the qualifying tournaments for the World and European Championships as a national team coach, losing only one game in 1983 to the Danish national team [61] , but it was this defeat that cost the British a trip to the 1984 European championship [62] . Robson announced his resignation, but Football Association chairman Bert Millichip did not accept her, and Robson continued to lead the team, leading her to the 1986 World Cup [63] . There, the England team was defeated in the match against Argentina , when Diego Maradona first scored a scandalous goal with his hand (“the hand of God ”), and five minutes later the legendary “ goal of the century ” (the British answered with just one goal) [64] .

England confidently got to Euro 1988, having lost only one point, and was noted in the qualification by defeating Turkey with a score of 8: 0 [62] , but at the tournament the English lost all three matches of Ireland, the Netherlands and the USSR, and they lost to the finalists with the same 1: 3 [65] . Robson began to be attacked by the press, and after a draw against Arabia , an article appeared in one newspaper calling "In the Name of Allah, Get Out!" [66] . Nevertheless, Robson continued to work with the national team, having ended up at the 1990 World Cup [67] .

Bobby Robson lost his captain Brian Robson due to Achilles sprain, despite the fact that the captain was declared for the World Cup [68] . Nevertheless, England took 1st place in the group, taking 4 points in three matches [69] , but there were some oddities. England abandoned the traditional 4-4-2 scheme to add the last defender to the defense - according to rumors, the players demanded it after the first match against Ireland (1: 1) [70] , but Robson denied this in his autobiography [71] . In the playoffs, the British knocked out Belgium and Cameroon, and then clashed with Germany in the semifinals [69] . The main time of the match ended in a draw 1: 1, and in the penalty shootout the British lost [72] . Robson left the national team after the tournament: the last time he appeared in public in July 2009, shortly before his death from cancer, speaking at the tournament for the prize of his own name. Veterans of the 1990s participated in that tournament, giving their memory to the legendary player and coach, and all the proceeds went to the fund for the fight against cancer [73] .

Another era of scandals (1990-2001)

The successor of Robson, who announced his retirement before the World Cup, was Graham Taylor , and this decision was approved by the Football Association of England in April 1990 [74] . Taylor led the national team to the 1992 European Championship, but the national team failed to leave the group there: the team lost to Sweden with a score of 1: 2, and the newspapers came out with the headlines “Swedes - Turnips - 2: 1” ( Eng. Swedes 2 Turnips 1 ), calling Taylor also “turnkey” ( Eng. Turnip Head ) [75] and adding a turnip instead of his head [76] . However, Taylor’s troubles did not end there: England in the 1994 qualifying tournament lost the decisive game for the Netherlands to enter the World Cup and was left without the World Cup for the third time in its history [77] . The qualifying tournament was later shown in one of the documentaries on television, and Taylor’s phrase “ Do I not like that ”, said after the defeat in the game with Poland, which also became one, also got into the film . of the reasons for the failure of the England team [78] [79] .

Glen Hoddle, England coach, 1996-1998

After Taylor's resignation, Terry Venables became the England coach. England was preparing for the home European Championship, and therefore for two years the British held friendly matches [80] . In January 1996, Venables announced the impending resignation after the Euro ended, but he brought the British to the semifinals of the European Championship and bronze medals - the highest achievement of the pioneers of football at the European Championship. At that tournament, the British lost on penalties to future champions, Germans [81] . Venibles was succeeded by Glenn Hoddle, who, to prepare the national team, brought to life the well-known healer in England, faith Eileen Drewery , who once helped Hoddle to heal the injury he received at the dawn of his career [82] . Drury was supposed to help the team overcome the psychological barrier and defend themselves against unreasonable criticism [83] . Hoddle assured everyone that Drury was only his psychologist, but before the 1998 World Cup, the press spread rumors that it was the healer who influenced Hoddle's choice of composition for the trip to France [84] . England dropped out at the stage of 1/8 finals, having again suffered a penalty loss and already from Argentina [85] .

Hoddle in his diary published his version of events at the World Cup and again caused the fire of the press. The Times reporter Matt Dickinson said in an interview that Hoddle considered the cause of all the failures as coach of the national team to be the sins that he allegedly committed in a past life [86] . Sports Minister Tony Banks joined the press accusations and Prime Minister Tony Blair. [87] Hoddle refused to resign and stated that his words had been misinterpreted and taken out of a speech in which he spoke of helping people with disabilities. [88]Despite the excuses, Hoddle was fired from England by decision of the Football Association [89] , which was especially welcomed by representatives of disabled people in the UK [90] .

После отставки Тейлора на первых полосах The Sun опубликовала статью «That's yer allotment» ( англ.

Bwing on the Euwos ) [128] .

You and I have been physically given two hands and two legs and half-decent brains. Some people have not been born like that for a reason. The karma is working from another lifetime. I have nothing to hide about that. It is not only people with disabilities. What you sow, you have to reap.

Personal life

Campaigns

In the Name of Allah Go ), «Норвежский навоз» ( англ.

I'm having a rough time and everybody wants Brian – give the job to him. If he's successful, everybody's happy. If he fails, that's the end of the clamour for Brian Clough to be England manager. He would have ruffled a few feathers and disturbed the corridors of power but I think he would have been a good England manager. He had good judgement, knew how to design a team and was a great motivator [142] .

One of the main objects of media ridicule in the history of the England national team was Steve McLaren , whom the press criticized more and more with each next match. When Saturday Comes football magazine wrote in January 2008 that McLaren’s last month on the national team was “ruthless and merciless” [143] , and after losing decisive qualifying matches for Euro 2008, the softest headline for the press was The Times the title “Defeat: Maclaren must go” ( Eng. Fail and McClaren has to go ) [143] . In the days when it was difficult for the British to choose a candidate for the position of national team coach, the media practiced wit and constantly parodied these searches. In October 2000, The Sun newspaper jokingly promoted the promotion of an ordinary donkey to the national team [144] .
