History
On August 18, 1942, by the order of the People's Commissar of Mortar Weapons of the USSR P.I. Parshin , a scientific research institute of chemical engineering NIIKHIMMASH was established, run by Glavkhimmash, located in Sverdlovsk. The future academician N. A. Dollezhal , at that time was appointed chief engineer of the project. He formulated the scientific and technical tasks of the staff of the developing institute, laid the organizational standards for work, from obtaining technical specifications through R&D to developing design and engineering documentation and issuing new industrial equipment by the institute with engineering production. Test institutes were created at the institute for experimental studies in hydrodynamics , heat and mass transfer processes, and the corresponding types and types of technological equipment. The Institute began to carry out certain types of work for the front and the national economy of the country, and since 1948 for the nuclear industry.
In connection with the growth of the nuclear energy complex of the USSR, the creation and development of radiochemical facilities, facilities for the production of radioisotopes , nuclear energy fuel and components of nuclear weapons , the institute was entrusted with the development and testing of new machines and apparatuses using the achievements of advanced science and technology, manufacturing and testing of prototypes, modernization of equipment for chemical, metallurgical and energy industries.
In 1957, the institute was transferred to the enterprises of the Ministry of Secondary Mechanical Engineering , for which it had previously carried out separate development of heat engineering and capacitive equipment. SverdNIIkhimmash developed into a comprehensive design and research institute with pilot production. He provided the facilities of the nuclear industry and energy of the USSR, and later the Russian Federation , with special equipment for almost all segments of the nuclear fuel cycle, being a developer of technological processes, machines and apparatuses. The Institute also created non-standard civilian equipment for the chemical, metallurgical , and oil and gas industries. Several dozens of employees were awarded State Prizes of the USSR Council of Ministers , as well as Lenin Prizes .
In 1992, SverdNIIkhimmash became part of the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation, which was transformed into the Federal Atomic Energy Agency (later the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom) in 2004 . In 2006, SverdNIIkhimmash OJSC became part of the Atomenergomash engineering division, which unites more than 50 Russian and foreign companies, including manufacturing enterprises, engineering centers and research organizations. The Atomenergomash group of companies is part of the Atomenergoprom state nuclear energy and industrial complex [5] [6] [7] [8] .
Scientific activity
Since its foundation, SverdNIIkhimmash has been engaged in scientific activities. In June 2014, the institute was staffed with highly qualified engineering personnel who are engaged in the development of design and technological documentation, conducting the necessary research and development work when creating new equipment samples, participate in the installation and commissioning of equipment, train future maintenance staff, and carry out field supervision . The Institute has a scientific and technical library with a fund of more than 70,000 volumes, a technical archive of documentation for the developed equipment, and its own patent fund. The "Training and Production Center of the Nuclear Industry" was established. The main objective of the center is to train specialists with higher education for SverdNIIkhimmash OJSC in the system of lifelong education " school - colleges - university " on the basis of USTU- UPI. The institute has full-time and part-time postgraduate studies , collections of scientific papers are published, employees of the institute participate in international scientific and technical conferences within the framework of the IAEA [9] [10] [11] .
Production
The production capacities of SverdNIIkhimmash OJSC are equipped with equipment that makes it possible to manufacture parts and assembly units in a wide range of corrosion-resistant , high-alloy , heat-resistant steels and alloys , as well as titanium .
The main and auxiliary equipment for enterprises of the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear power plants , equipment for desalination of water and water treatment for heating systems, plants for the chemical and metallurgical industries, special plants for the processing and disposal of industrial waste [12] [13] [14] are produced .
SverdNIIhimmash OJSC has state licenses and certificates for the development and manufacture of equipment for nuclear facilities, radiation sources and storage facilities for nuclear materials and radioactive substances, radioactive waste storage facilities , a license for educational activities in educational programs. Certificate of conformity of the institute’s quality management system as applied to the research and development activities of the standard ISO 9001: 2008 [15] [16] .
Achievements
In 1961, it was decided to entrust the institute with the development of a desalination plant in the city of Shevchenko and to supply water to the Mangyshlak region of the Kazakh SSR with desalinated water using steam from a working BN-350 reactor . Two pilot plants were tested: an analogue of a foreign one, and one proposed by the specialists of SverdNIIkhimmash. According to the test results, the distillation desalination plant of SverdNIIkhimmash was adopted, which for 30 years was the only atomic desalination plant in the world. For this work, six employees of the institute were awarded the Lenin Prize in 1966 [17] .
In 1963, SverdNIIkhimmash was involved in the development of equipment for the new chemical and metallurgical production of high-quality plutonium using the latest technology, a waste-free technological cycle with safe working conditions. The complex was put into operation in late 1970 and is still operating in a stable and safe mode of operation with high technical and economic indicators.
In 1974, the first accident localization system (ALS) was launched at the Bilibino NPP . In 1977, the first RT-1 spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant was commissioned. In 1980, a line for assembling fuel elements for VVER-1000 reactors and a line for assembling fuel elements BN-350 at the NZKhK were launched . In 2002, a technical design for the closed nuclear fuel cycle of the BREST-OD-300 and BN-800 reactor was developed . In 2007, equipment for hydrogen burning plants was developed and delivered for Kudankulam NPP in India and for Bushehr NPP in Iran .
In subsequent years, a wide range of equipment was developed, manufactured and put into operation for various nuclear power plants in Russia near and far abroad in the field of fuel supply and disposal of spent nuclear fuel, safety systems for NPP personnel, auxiliary and diagnostic equipment. Evaporators and vacuum crystallizers, filters, centrifuges, ion-exchange and distillation columns, adsorbers and absorbers, means of mechanization and pressurized transport have been created and are being used in industry [18] .
On September 3, 1999, by an order of the Government of the Russian Federation , SverdNIIkhimmash OJSC was included in the list of joint-stock companies producing products (goods, services) of strategic importance for ensuring the national security of the state , enshrined in federal property, whose shares are not subject to early sale [19] .
