The defeat of the Americans in this battle allowed the British troops under the command of General Ross and Admiral Coburn to capture the US capital, the city of Washington . The British seized huge war booty and burned the Capitol , the White House and other public buildings. This event is called the greatest disgrace of the US Army [3] .
At this stage of the Anglo-American War, the British, liberated from the war in Europe, began to pull their fleets of troops from Europe to the east coast of the United States. The landing of many thousands of landings did not turn into raids, but into full-fledged battles for the capture of important strategic cities, ports and fortresses of the American east coast. In fact, the Atlantic coast of the United States, and in particular the Chesapeake Bay , in which the British reigned supreme, turned into a full-fledged eastern front for the United States.
