Biography and Creativity
He studied at the Lyon art school , in 1819 he moved to Paris, where he studied with Baron Gro and Abel Pujol , but did not become a painter like them, but devoted himself to drawing cartoons and publishing satirical newspapers and albums [5] .
His ludicrous and revealing compositions, lithographed for the most part by himself, competed with drawings by Travier , Henri Monier and Gavarni and earned him the nickname " Juvenile Caricatures". He sat for them many times in the dock, paid fines , was imprisoned , but all these troubles did not cool him down to activities encouraged by the attention of the public. [five]
Around 1825, he published two series of drawings, “The History of the Pisiniel , the Prodigal Son” (“Histoire de Polichinelle enfant prodigue”) and “The History of the Fidget” (“Histoire de Touche-à-tout”), of which the second particularly contributed to his fame [ 5] .
He later founded the magazine La Caricature (1830), which he soon had to cease as a result of the lawsuit, and then published Le Charivari (1832–1838), illustrated The Adventures of Robert Macaire [6] (Le Robert Macaire , in collaboration with Daumier ) and Journal pour rire (1848–1855; with texts by the journalists M. Albois and L. Guar ), which later turned into Journal Amusant (1856–1933). [five]
In addition, he published several separate notebooks with caricatures [5] .
