Biography

Little documentary evidence of the singer has been preserved and they are sketchy.

Training in Novgorod the Great

In Novgorod the Great, Ivan Nos, along with another prominent singer, Fyodor Krest'yanin, studied znamenny singing with the master Savva Rogov at the school of church singing, it existed there in the second third of the 16th century (according to the Orthodox Encyclopedia, based on the work of N.P. Parfentiev, this happened in late 30s - the first half of the 40s of the XVI century [2] ). B. P. Kutuzov suggested that directly from this Novgorodian singing school, Ivan the Terrible took both Fyodor Krestyaninin and his fellow practitioner Ivan Nos to Moscow as their court singing masters [3] . According to the assumption of B.P. Kutuzov, the Novgorod period in the life of Ivan Nos might not have existed, since there is evidence that "the Rogov brothers, Novgorod masters and singers of the mid-16th century ... then formed an entire school of composers (singers) in Moscow," therefore Ivan The nose could learn from the Rogovs in the capital [3] .

Ivan Nos at Joseph Volokolamsk Monastery

The Parfentievs suggest that after studying with Savva Rogov in Novgorod the Great, he walked around the city, teaching singing. The documents of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery contain notes on the activity of a certain Ivan Nos as a “young” monastery servant (N.P. Parfentiev identifies him with the chanter Ivan Nos). The wealth of the monastery was widely known in the 16th century. The economy of the entire monastery was run by monastic elders, but people who were not monks were hired to manage the economy of individual villages. In documents, they are called "monastery servants", "clerks" or "key keeper". The record for November 26, 1548 states that the monastery treasurer Lavrenty “gave Ivan Nos the key to the village of Ogchishchevo, as Vasily had for the icon-holder”. This is the earliest mention of Ivan Nos in the monastery documents. Researchers note that he replaced in the service of another representative of the profession related to art, an icon painter. In April 1549 he was again mentioned among the “young servants”. This time, Ivan Nos was given a salary of about 40 Altyn. Later he received appointments in the villages of Ivanovskoye, Lukovnikovo, Novoe. They trusted him to receive a salary for servants: a janitor and a janitor, "istobniks." The documents of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery mentioned Ivan Nos for the last time in February 1557, when his next term of service ended (another person was already appointed to the village of Novoe [2] ) [4] . Ivan Nos, obviously, retained some ties with this monastery. In the inventory of the monastery library for 1573, the singing book "Yermoloy" is mentioned as his contribution. It was impossible to establish when the contribution was made [5] .

Ivan Nos at the court of Ivan the Terrible

In the 30s of the 17th century, “The Preface, Where I Will Be, and from what time began in our Rusty of the Earth, consonant singing” several times mentions the name of Ivan Nos in relation to the stay of Ivan the Terrible in the Alexander settlement during the oprichnina :

And his brother, Sava, had disciples, the figured priest Fyodor, according to the ad the Christian, yes John Nose, and Stephen, the promiscuous Golysh . And that John Nose, but Pop Fedor Christian was byzantine to the kingdom of the pious king and Grand Duke John Vasilyevich of all Russia. And byakhu with him in his beloved village, in the settlement of Alexandrov. But the triode was burnt and explained by John Nos, as he was in the settlement of Alexandrov by Tsar John Vasilievich; and to many saints the poets and the glorifier were divorced. Yes, he John rozpel cross-bearded and bogorodichnye Minea [6]

According to Maxim Brazhnikov , Ivan Nos for about seventeen years could be in the Alexander settlement (from the end of 1564 to 1582) [7] .

In 1573, Ivan Nos was mentioned in the state of sovereign cross deacons who performed singing and other functions during the “house prayer” of the king in his chambers and in the so-called Cross Chamber. In the list of clerks on March 20, 1573, he was named the only one of nine persons with a middle name - Ivan Yuryev Nos (according to researchers, this indicates that by that time he was respected at court). In the state of Ivan Nos, he took fourth place, and in terms of size, his salary was the third among the clerks of the cross [8] . Cross clerks were in a more privileged position than simple singing "village" clerks. The sovereign director Ivan Ondreev received a salary of 25 rubles a year, and the clerks: Vasily Ondreev - 15 rubles, Ivan Yuryev Nos - 10 rubles, Vasily Ivanov - 4 rubles [9] . Not a single work signed by the name of Ivan Nos has been preserved [8] .

Ivan Nos in the Assessment of Musicologists

After long oblivion, interest in his work and work appeared with the release of the book by V. Undolsky “Remarks for the history of church singing in Russia” in 1864 [10] . B. P. Kutuzov calls Ivan Nos an outstanding representative of the Moscow School of Znamenny Singing [7] .
