The Komodo lizard [1] , or the giant Indonesian monitor lizard [1] , or the Komodos monitor lizard [2] , or the Komodo dragon [3] ( lat. Varanus komodoensis ), is a species of lizards from the family of monitor lizards (Varanidae). Currently, the species is distributed on the Indonesian islands of Komodo , Rincha , Flores and Gili-Motang , although it used to be more widely distributed - in particular, it was found in Australia and Java . The aborigines of the islands call it the ora or buoy Dara ("land crocodile"). [four]

The Komodo monitor lizard is the largest of the currently existing lizards and the heaviest modern representative of the scaly : some representatives of this species can grow over 3 meters in length and weigh more than 130 kilograms.Despite this, the Komodo monitor lizard is not an example of island gigantism , because, contrary to the earlier point of view, it is a representative of a separate evolutionary line of giant monitor lizards that originated in Australia, and not a unique product of evolution on isolated islands. The age of the oldest fossil remains of Komodo monitor lizards found in Australia is more than 3.8 million years. On the island of Flores, this species came about 900 thousand years ago, avoiding extinction that befell the rest of the Australian megafauna .
Komodo monitor lizards are the highest predators and currently do not overlap with other large land predators, with the exception of humans , reticulated pythons and feral dogs . Young monitor lizards are arboreal and have a very diverse diet. The diet of adult Komodo monitor lizards consists mainly of large ungulates of mammals , but they also do not disdain other prey, including carrion and its relatives. Earlier, the myth that a large number of pathogenic bacteria accumulate in the mouth of the Komodo lizards, causing blood poisoning in the bitten victim, was popular. But at present, this statement, based on inaccurate observations, is considered invalid. There are no more pathogenic microorganisms present in the oral cavity of the Komodo lizard than any other large predator, and they carefully monitor its purity. Instead, it has recently been discovered that the Komodosky monitor lizard has poisonous glands that release toxic proteins . But their role in killing the victim is also disputed and, at best, insignificant. The Komodo lizard has an anatomically distinctive skull and serrate teeth, resembling those of carnivorous dinosaurs and constituting an effective cutting tool. Varan is able to kill an animal more than 10–15 times its weight, cutting its tendons in the legs, then having a snack on the neck or lower abdomen. Sometimes attacks on people were also noted. Komodo lizards have high immunity , preventing infection of wounds.
Mating takes place from May to August , and eggs are laid in September. Breeding rates of the Komodo monitor lizard are small: 20 eggs are laid in the nest built by the female or birds, after which, unlike many other monitor lizards, the female carefully guards them. Eggs are incubated for seven to eight months, hatching in April. . Komodo monitors take from 8 to 9 years to mature, and their lifespan exceeds 30 years.
Komodo lizards were first noticed by Western scientists in 1910. Their large size and formidable reputation make them popular exhibits of zoos . In the wild, the habitat of the species was greatly reduced due to human activity, which is why it was introduced into the IUCN with the status " Vulnerable ". Komodo lizards are protected by Indonesian law, and for the sake of their preservation, the Komodo National Park was created.
Evolution
The evolutionary development of the Komodo lizard began with the appearance of the genus Varanus , which, according to modern research, originated in Asia about 40 million years ago and migrated to Australia . Approximately 15 million years ago, the clash between Australia and Southeast Asia allowed the Varanas to explore the terrain, the elevations of which later became the Indonesian archipelago, and to populate islands such as distant Timor .
Previously it was mistakenly thought that the Komodo monitor lizard evolved as an island predator. However, it is currently established that this species originates from Australia. The Komodo lizard separated from its Australian ancestor in the Pliocene about 4 million years ago. The fossil remains of Komodo monitor lizards, found in Queensland , indicate that this species existed for a long time in Australia before it entered Indonesia [5] [6] . The decline in sea level during the last ice age revealed vast areas of land, which helped the Komodo lizards to colonize their modern habitats - apparently, the Komodo lizards reached Flores about 900 thousand years ago, but the subsequent sea level rise, on the contrary, isolated their separate populations on the islands . Such a migration followed by isolation saved the species from the mass extinction of the Australian megafauna . The closest relatives of the Komodo Varanus are megalania , which appeared in Australia in the Pleistocene, Varanus sivalensis , originating from the Pliocene of mainland Asia, as well as the undescribed giant monitor lizard from the Middle Pleistocene of Timor and Australia. These four species form a detached clade of giant macroinhabial monitor lizards, which flourished in Australia and Asia until their extinction with the onset of climate change at the end of the Pleistocene [7] [8] .
Spread
Currently, Komodo monitor lizards live on several islands of Indonesia - Komodo (1,700 individuals), Rinch (1,300 individuals), Gili-Motang (100 individuals) and Flores (about 2,000 individuals driven off by human activity closer to the coast), located in the group of Small Sunda islands [9] . According to researchers, in the Pleistocene Komodo monitor lizards also lived in Java , which was then part of mainland Asia. While the historical homeland of the Komodo lizard should be considered Australia , where this species developed and from where it moved to the nearby islands about 900 thousand years ago [10] .
Appearance
The color of adult monitor lizards is dark brown, usually with small yellowish spots and specks. The skin is strengthened by small osteodermas . Young animals are painted brighter, on the back they have rows of reddish-orange and yellowish oculate spots, merging into stripes on the neck and tail.
The teeth of the Komodo monitor are pleurodont , the crowns are strongly compressed from the sides and have uniform serrate edges on the anterior and posterior margin ( zyphodontia ). Such teeth are well suited for killing and tearing large prey into individual pieces of meat [11] .
Dimensions
According to Walter Auffenberg's research, adult Komodo monitor lizards are usually from 2.25 to 2.6 m in length and weigh from 35 to 59 kg (a sample of 12 individuals) [4] . Males are noticeably larger than females and in some cases can reach at least 3 meters in length and weigh over 70 kg. According to the Guinness Book of Records , adult males of Komodo lizards weigh from 79 to 91 kg with a length of 2.59 m, while females weigh from 68 to 73 kg with a length of 2.29 m [12] . But in this case the contents of the stomach can also be taken into account, the mass of which, after feeding, can reach or even exceed 20 kg in adult monitor lizards. In Loh Liang National Park , Komodo Island, the monitor lizard was 304 cm long (154.05 cm from the tip of the nose to the cloaca ) and weighed 81.5 kg without regard to the contents of the stomach [13] . In captivity, these lizards reach even larger sizes - the largest known specimen, for which there are reliable data, was kept in the St. Louis Zoo and had a length of 3.13 m and a weight of 166 kg [8] . The tail is about half the total length of the body.
Island Giantism
Previously it was believed that the large size of the Komodo monitor lizard is an example of island gigantism , although at present this point of view is considered invalid, since the Komodo monitor lizard evolved in Australia before reaching the islands [7] [14] [15] . In spite of this, the Komodo monitor lizard and the near extinct giant monitor lizard from Timor (slightly larger than the Komodo monitor lizard in size) are examples of large island predators [16] . Since islands tend to offer a limited amount of food and territory, large warm-blooded predators (such as carnivorous mammals ) are usually smaller on them than on the mainland. However, the resources of the islands may be quite enough to support large cold-blooded predators. At the same time, the Komodo monitor lizard is still not as large as its extinct Australian relative (and once a contemporary) - megalania , which appeared in Australia much later than the Komodo monitor lizards and as a more specialized predator [7] .
At the same time, the occupied ecological niche and the large size of the Komodo monitor lizard are in no way connected with the absence of large placental predators on the islands. Fossils Komodo monitor lizards from the Pleistocene island of Java , a closely related species V aranus sivalensi from the Pliocene of India , as well as the possible presence of large carnivores in the Pliocene and Pleistocene on Flores show that migrated from Australia's giant lizards freely coexisted with large predatory mammals without vzaimovytesneniya [7] .
Lifestyle
Komodo lizards lead a single life, meeting and interacting with each other in non-permanent groups only during feeding or during the breeding season.
Varanas are poikilothermic animals and are active mainly during the day, although nightly activity is also noted for the Komodo lizard. Komodo lizards usually hunt in the afternoon, but prefer to stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day. At night, they hide in shelters, from which they leave again early in the morning. The large size allows the Komodo monitors to maintain a fairly high body temperature during the night ( gigantothermia ) and, thus, reduce the time of basking in the morning.
Komodo lizard prefers dry, well-warmed areas of the sun, and usually lives on arid plains, in savannas and dry tropical forests at low altitude. In the hot season (May — October), it adheres to the dried-up beds of rivers with jungle-covered banks. Often goes to the coast in search of a beached beach. It can go into the sea water, swims well and can even swim to the neighboring island, having covered a considerable distance.
Despite its size, even adult Komodo lizards are quite flexible and dodgy, but when running, they can only accelerate to 20 km / h. Like other monitor lizards, they have a special pump under the tongue that delivers air to the lungs: this allows the Komodo monitor lizards to move and breathe at the same time, raising their aerobic abilities and endurance. To get food that is at a height (for example, on a tree), a monitor lizard can climb on its hind legs, using the tail as a support, and even jump up. Young animals are somewhat faster, climb well and spend a lot of time in the trees.
As shelters, Komodo's lizards use burrows with a length of 1 to 5 m, which they dig out with the help of strong legs with long, curved and sharp claws. Asylum for young monitor lizards are hollows and crown of trees.
Adult individuals do not have natural enemies in the wild, with the exception of larger relatives and humans. It is possible that the occasional combed crocodiles that can cope even with the largest predatory mammals can be of some kind of threat sometimes in the river mouths of Flores. However, such large, strong and dangerous prey, such as boars or buffaloes, in self-defense can sometimes inflict injuries to Komodo monitor lizards; in particular, adult males of monitor lizards often carry scars from boar tusks on their bodies. Cubs in some cases, perhaps, may become a victim of predators such as snakes , cats , dogs , civet and birds of prey . [four]
The natural life expectancy of Komodo monitor lizards in nature is probably about 50 years, according to estimates - up to 62 years. Moreover, according to some data, the life expectancy of females of this species is approximately half as long as that of males. In captivity, it has not yet been noted that the Komodo lizard lived more than 25 years. [17] [18]
Like most reptiles, Komodos monitor lizards are deprived of this vocal apparatus, and their voice resembles a deaf vulture or hiss. Large individuals, when irritated, make a sound, medium between hissing and growling.
Power
At different stages of life, Komodo monitor lizards feed on a variety of animals, both vertebrates and invertebrates. Depending on the size and age, they can eat insects (mostly orthoptera ), crabs , fish , sea turtles (including large loggerheads ), ashore, lizards, snakes (including poisonous ones), birds, crocodile cubs, rodents (from mice and rats to porcupines ), civet, deer , boars , domestic or feral dogs, cats , goats , buffaloes , cattle , horses, and even their relatives. Komodo lizards do not disdain even carrion, although they are more characteristic of independent hunting [4] . The most flexible diet, which includes the largest number of prey species, has young Komodo lizards weighing from 1 to 25 kg - their preferred food objects, as a rule, are black rats , ungulate calves and musangs . While large adults feed almost exclusively on large ungulates - mainly deer and wild boars, and only occasionally - on birds and their eggs, while the smallest are limited to eating insects and small lizards. Young lizards can even climb trees to get to small animals that are too high for their older relatives, and spend a lot of time there in their first years of life. [4] [19] Cannibalism is very common in Komodo monitor lizards, especially during the famine years: large individuals often eat young and smaller monitor lizards - they can make up to 8.8% of their total diet. Adult lizards are at the top of the food chain in their habitats. It is believed that their presence on the islands limits the resettlement of such large snakes as reticulated pythons , which can be found in the neighboring territories, but apparently very vulnerable to the predatory activity of the monitor lizards. A large Komodo monitor lizard, as a rule, drives away any number of boars and feral dogs from carrion or scraps [4] .
Komodo lizards usually switch to feeding on large animals when their weight reaches about 20 kg. But despite this, successful attacks were recorded and smaller in size (weighing around 10 kg) of adolescent monitor lizards on ungulates weighing about 50 kg. [19] In general, the Komodo monitor lizard is a very effective predator for its size, capable of killing a prey 10-15 times its own weight. Once it was even observed that a huge buffalo weighing about 1200 kg was eaten by the lizards. [4] In the past, perhaps Komodo monitor lizards actively hunted dwarf stegodons , whose average mass varied from 300 to 850 and even 2000 kg depending on the species [20] .
Komodo lizards have a very good sense of smell and easily find food at a distance of 4 to 9.5 km by smell using a long forked tongue. The smell of torn carcasses, carrion or even just a wounded animal sometimes collects a large number of monitor lizards. In places of feeding, fights between males are frequent in order to establish and maintain a hierarchical order (usually non-lethal, although in some cases the losing males are still killed and eaten by competitors), as well as deliberate pushing off and regular attempts to kill and eat smaller and weaker monitor lizards. . The Komodo lizards feed, tearing out large pieces of flesh from the carcass and swallowing them whole - the wide and curved muzzle allows them to immediately tear pieces up to 2.5 kg from the prey. At first, as a rule, the intestines are eaten, but its vegetable contents are avoided. In one sitting, a hungry monitor lizard can eat an amount of meat equal to about 80% of the mass of his own body. The autopsy and eating of the prey usually occurs about 10-25 times faster than in the case of predatory mammals of the same size. One female Komodo monitor lizard weighing 42 kg ate 30 kg of boar in just 17 minutes [4] . However, relatively small prey, up to the size of an adult goat, can be swallowed up by an entire lizard, which is facilitated by a movable joint of the mandible bones and a roomy stretchable stomach. Despite the fact that the lizards emit a large amount of red saliva, lubricating food, swallowing a whole carcass takes a decent amount of time (about 15-20 minutes to swallow a goat). Some lizards accelerate this process by pushing the carcass into the mouth, pushing it against the nearest trees, sometimes with such force that they can be tumbled down onto the ground [21] . The eaten prey is digested along with the bones, but the feathers, scales, horns, wool, and hooves of the hoof are burped in the form of large lumps glued together with mucus, thus recalling the process of regurgitation in birds and some other reptiles. After eating the monitor lizard carefully licks and wipes its face on the ground.
Method of killing the victim
Deer and boars of monitor lizards hunt from ambushes, trapping the victim near a watering place, a drowning bed, or a forest trail. When attacking, the Komodo monitor lizard sometimes tries to knock an animal down with a powerful blow of its tail (especially if it tries to fight back), sometimes even breaking its legs. But a more standard tactic to immobilize the victim is to tear the tendons on the limbs with your teeth and to apply terrible, bleeding wounds. The prey is killed by inflicting many torn wounds in the abdomen or neck, or, when injuring limbs and losing the ability to resist, simply begins to be eaten alive. If the boar or deer manages to escape from the first attack, the monitor lizard continues to pursue it, guided by the smell of blood. Asian buffalo - the largest animals that live on the islands, are often the victims of male Komodo lizards more than 2.5 meters long. Varan, as a rule, circles around the intended target, avoiding hitting with hoofs and horns, and bites it every time a convenient opportunity falls out, usually trying to cut tendons on the legs of the animal. This continues until the buffalo falls to the ground from his injuries, after which the monitor lizard rips his belly. With the greatest ease, the monitor lords overpower the tied buffaloes, forced to fight instead of fleeing. About the same tactics Komodos monitor lizards are used when they are straightened with cattle or horses. Wild and domestic dogs, as a rule, find themselves suddenly caught by a monitor lizard during an ambush attack, or caught right on the territory of human settlements, often falling prey to even young (about 1.5 meters long) lizards.Relatively slow domestic goats, females of sea turtles that came ashore and various small animals are caught by the monitor lizards as a result of a quick throw in the direction of the victim and its subsequent rapid killing [4] .
Reproduction
Poison
Security Status
