History
In 911, the King of France Charles III solved the problem of the constant raids of the Normans , transferring the north-west coast with the territory along the Seine , which became the duchy of Normandy , to the possession of their leader Rollo . Saint-Hilaire, at that time a small village on the border of Normandy, Brittany and Maine, was annexed to this territory in 933.
In 1083, William the Conqueror rated this place as strategically important and ordered his cousin Robert de Morten to build a castle here. In the same year, a Benedictine monastery was founded in Saint-Hilaire.
By the XV century, the military significance of St. Hilaire was lost and the city began to develop as a shopping center. After the Revolution, the local castle was destroyed, and its stones three decades later were used in the construction of the Church of St. Hilaire. In 1889, Saint-Hilaire-du-Arcue became one of the first cities in France to which electricity came.
In 1944, the city was at the center of fierce fighting, as a result of which almost the entire center was destroyed and rebuilt after the war.
