Biography
Came from a powerful aristocratic Neville family. The third son of Richard Neville (c. 1400-1460), 5th Earl of Salisbury (1428-1460), and Alice Montague (1405-1462). The younger brother of Richard Neville (1428-1471), the 16th Earl of Warwick (1449-1471) and the 6th Earl of Salisbury ( 1460 - 1471 ).
Born in Salisbury , Wiltshire . In January 1453, John Neville in Greenwich was knighted by the King of England, Henry VI of Lancaster . John Neville participated on the side of his father Richard Neville in the struggle with the powerful family of Percy for control over northern border England.
On September 23, 1459, John Neville, along with his father Richard Neville and his brother Thomas, participated in the Battle of Blor-Heaf ( Staffordshire ). The Lancaster army under the command of James Tachet, Baron Audley, and John Sutton, Baron Dadi, was completely defeated. Despite the victory of the Yorkists in this battle, John Neville was captured by the Lancaster. After the victory of supporters of the York dynasty at the Battle of Northampton ( July 10, 1460 ), John Neville was released from captivity.
In 1461, King Edward IV of England granted John Neville the title of Knight of the Order of the Garter . In February of the same 1461, he participated in the second battle of St. Albans , where he commanded the center of the Yorkist army, where he was again captured by the Lancaster.
After his release from captivity, John Neville became the keeper of the eastern mark on the Scottish border and took part in the suppression of Lancaster resistance in northern England. He defeated the Lancaster at the battles of Hegley Moore ( April 25, 1464 ) and Hexham ( May 15, 1464 ). In May 1464 he received the title of Earl of Northumberlen as a reward for his victories.
In March 1470, John Neville was forced to regain the earl title and possessions of his enemy, Heinrich Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland . In return, he received the title of Marquis of Montague, but without possessions confirming the title.
At first, John Neville, Marquis of Montague , remained faithful to King Edward IV of England, but then in 1470 he sided with his older brother, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick , who joined the Lancaster party and led a rebellion against the king. John Neville facilitated the expulsion of King Edward IV from England and the reinstatement of Henry VI on the royal throne, who returned to him all the posts on the northern border.
In the spring of 1471, the English king Edward IV landed with his army in Yorkshire . John Neville teamed up with his brother Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick , and the Lancers in Coventry . April 14, 1471 participated in the battle of Barnet , where he commanded the center of the Lancaster army. He died in this battle.
