History
Organized in 1939. The cemetery is stretched from south to north, in the west it adjoins the Tomsk-Taiga railway line , in the east - to the Kolarovsky tract.
During the Great Patriotic War , beginning in 1942, about a thousand soldiers were buried in the Southern Cemetery, who died of wounds in military hospitals of Tomsk. Here is the mass grave of 20 cadets of the Tomsk Artillery School , who died on February 21, 1944 (an explosion occurred in the classroom during classes due to the careless handling of a combat mine).
At the closure of the Preobrazhensky cemetery in Tomsk (in June 1959), part of the graves were transferred here, in particular , A.V. Shishkov , Chairman of the Tomsk Provincial Cheka , and Tomsk Archbishop Dimitri (Belikov) .
In 1959, to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi invaders, it was decided to establish a memorial complex at the cemetery. The opening of the memorial took place on May 9, 1960.
The cemetery operated until 1962, eventually became the main Tomsk cemetery. Academicians V.D. Kuznetsov [2] , N.V. Vershinin [3] , A.G. Savinykh [4] , M.A. Usov [5] (burial transferred from the Preobrazhensky cemetery during its liquidation), professors are buried here. [6] and teachers [7] of Tomsk universities.
In 1966, by decision of the Tomsk City Council, the cemetery was entered in the list of specially protected memorial zones. In 1975, a part of the cemetery was reconstructed, on the right side of the central alley, on a hill, designed by architects N. K. Yakovlev and V. R. Novikov. On the hillside there is a series of marble and granite slabs with the names of 618 more buried.
In 2010, the memorial was updated, a bronze figure of a warrior was installed [8] . In September 2014, the remains of two participants of the Great Patriotic War, natives of the Tomsk region, were buried in the cemetery [9] .
The question of opening a cemetery for new graves is being discussed. [ten]
