Yuri Borisovich Simchenko ( August 8, 1935 - January 30, 1995 ) - Soviet and Russian anthropologist, ethnographer, doctor of historical sciences , member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences , corresponding member of the German Institute for the Study of Foreign Thinking Systems and Forms of Organization, member of the Writers' Union of Russia , honorary polar explorer.

He studied the peoples of the North, mainly Nganasan , was fluent in the Nganasan language [1] . The largest (along with B.O. Dolgikh ) collector of Nganasan folklore.

Biography
In 1959 he graduated from the Moscow Historical and Archival Institute , after which until 1961 he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Then he entered the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology RAS ), where he worked until the end of his life.
Yuri Borisovich spent more than ten years on expeditions to the Far North of Russia. In the years 1964-1965, during an expedition on dogs, he drove from Chukotka to the Kola Peninsula .
Expeditions to the Taimyr Peninsula occupied a special place in his scientific life. From 1961 to 1977, he was there almost every year, studying the ethnic culture of the North Samoyed peoples - the Nenets, Ents, but to a greater extent Nganasan as descendants of the indigenous population of Taimyr. [2]
In the last years of his life, he worked as the chief researcher , head of the Coordination and Methodological Center "Peoples and Cultures" of the IEA RAS, was the editor-in-chief of the Russian ethnographer almanac.
He initiated the preparation of a series of ethnographic works, called "Peoples and Cultures."

The scientific works of Yu. B. Simchenko are devoted to ethnogenesis, marriage systems, and the terminology of kinship between the peoples of the Ural language family, the ethnic history of the Nganasans, Dolgans, Yukagirs, their material and spiritual culture, the problems of the economic cycle, the social structure of the peoples of Siberia and the North, their religious ideas and rites , folklore, as well as the modern ethnic, socio-economic and cultural development of the northern peoples.
