Case History

The 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Corps was formed by order of the USSR NPO July 2, 1944 by renaming from the 4th Fighter Aviation Corps [1] .

The corps covered the troops and airfields of the Voronezh , then the Steppe (from October 20, 1943 - 2nd Ukrainian ) fronts in the Battle of Kursk , the Battle of the Dnieper , during the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine, in Yasso-Chisinau, Debrecen, Budapest, Vienna and Prague offensive operations.

In August 1944, the corps participated in the Iasi-Chisinau offensive operation. For the differences in battles during the capture of the troops of the front of the city of Iasi (August 21), he was awarded the honorary name of Iasi (September 15, 1944). In October 1944 - February 1945, the corps took part in the Debrecen and Budapest offensive operations, during which it successfully covered mainly the formations of the 1st Horse-Mechanized (since January 26, 1945, the 1st Guards Horse-Mechanized) group of the 2nd Ukrainian front.

In the Balaton operation, in cooperation with the fighter aviation units of the 17th Air Army, it reliably protected the troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front from attacks by enemy aircraft when they repelled an enemy counter-attack. The corps conducted successful air battles with enemy aircraft in March - April in Vienna , and in May in Prague offensive operations.
