Case History
The 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Corps was formed by order of the USSR NPO July 2, 1944 by renaming from the 4th Fighter Aviation Corps [1] .
The corps covered the troops and airfields of the Voronezh , then the Steppe (from October 20, 1943 - 2nd Ukrainian ) fronts in the Battle of Kursk , the Battle of the Dnieper , during the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine, in Yasso-Chisinau, Debrecen, Budapest, Vienna and Prague offensive operations.
In August 1944, the corps participated in the Iasi-Chisinau offensive operation. For the differences in battles during the capture of the troops of the front of the city of Iasi (August 21), he was awarded the honorary name of Iasi (September 15, 1944). In October 1944 - February 1945, the corps took part in the Debrecen and Budapest offensive operations, during which it successfully covered mainly the formations of the 1st Horse-Mechanized (since January 26, 1945, the 1st Guards Horse-Mechanized) group of the 2nd Ukrainian front.
In the Balaton operation, in cooperation with the fighter aviation units of the 17th Air Army, it reliably protected the troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front from attacks by enemy aircraft when they repelled an enemy counter-attack. The corps conducted successful air battles with enemy aircraft in March - April in Vienna , and in May in Prague offensive operations.

- Prague operation from May 6, 1945 to May 11, 1945.
For the exemplary performance of command tasks in battles with German troops during the liberation of Czechoslovakia, he was awarded the Orders of Suvorov 2nd degree (May 17, 1945) and the Red Banner (June 4, 1945). During the war years, corps connections made over 41 thousand sorties and destroyed more than 2 thousand enemy planes. For military exploits, several thousand of his soldiers were awarded orders and medals, and 46 of them were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Pro-War Corps History
The 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Yas Red Banner Order of the Suvorov Corps on January 10, 1949 was renamed the 72nd Guards Fighter Aviation Yas Red Banner Order of the Suvorov Corps [3] .
In April 1960, the corps in connection with the reorganization of the Armed Forces was reorganized in accordance with the Law of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR “On a New Significant Reduction of the USSR Armed Forces” dated 01.15.1960 to the 16th Guards Yas Red Banner Order of the Suvorov Air Defense Division . At the same time, the corps regiments were included in the new division:
- 66th Fighter Aviation Allenstein Order of Suvorov Air Defense Regiment ( Jebel , Ashkhabad region , Turkmen SSR , MiG-17 );
- 177th Guards Fighter Aviation Debrecen Order of Suvorov Air Defense Regiment (Yangadzha, Turkmen SSR , MiG-17 );
- 179th Guards Fighter Aviation Transylvanian Order of the Suvorov Air Defense Regiment ( Krasnovodsk , Turkmen SSR , MiG-17 );
- 364th Air Defense Fighter Aviation Regiment ( Nebit-Dag , Ashgabat Oblast , Turkmen SSR , MiG-17 ).
In subsequent years, the 66th and 177th Guards fighter aviation regiments were disbanded as part of the division.
