Tetyaev, Mikhail Mikhailovich

Mikhail Mikhailovich Tetyayev - Russian, Soviet tectonist geologist, doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences, professor of the Leningrad Mining Institute (1930). Simultaneously and independently with V. G. Bukher [1], he developed the pulsating hypothesis of the geotectonic development of the Earth, which he formulated as a generalization of the hypotheses of contraction (compression) and expansion (expansion) in the 30s of the XX century.

Biography

Mikhail Tetyaev was born in Novgorod, in the family of a lawyer. He graduated from high school in Vitebsk , in 1900 he entered the St. Petersburg University in the natural department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. In February 1901, for participation in the student revolutionary movement by the verdict of the Special Meeting under the Ministry of Public Education, he was dismissed from the institute and put into the army. In the autumn he returned, but in 1903 he was expelled again, without the right to re-enter. He studied in Belgium, where he graduated from the technical department of the University of Liege (at the Mining School of the Faculty of Mechanics) with a degree in mining engineering (1911). There he defended his thesis on the Paleozoic formations of European Russia and received the academic title of geologist (1912) [2] .

In 1912–1937 he worked at the Geolkom - TsNIGRI : from 1912, from 1926–1928 - scientific secretary, from 1932–1934 - deputy director of the TsNIGRI , from 1930 - professor of the Leningrad State University and Leningrad State University . Field work was conducted mainly in the Baikal and Transbaikalia . He taught at the Geographical Institute (since 1918), Leningrad State University (since 1925), from 1930 - Professor of the Leningrad Mining Institute . He led the geotectonics cabinet at TsNIGRI (1934-1937).

One of the organizers of the XVII session of the International Geological Congress (Moscow, 1937).

The well-known “disturber of geological calm”: for his innovative book “Basics of geotectonics” (1934), for five years not a single review was published.

During the war, he worked in the South Urals , then in Cheremkhove , from where he returned from evacuation to Leningrad with the Leningrad Institute.

Arrested in Leningrad in June 1949 on the " Krasnoyarsk case ". The CCA was sentenced at the MGB of the USSR on October 28, 1950 to a conclusion in the ITL for 25 years. In the camp, he worked in the geological department of the Special Technical Bureau (OTB-1 (Krasnoyarsk)), was the chief geologist of Yeniseystroi, part of the GULAG structure, then worked at the ore combine of the same department. In the camp, along with Professor of the Moscow Mining Institute, Kreiter , Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR , Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Rusakov , Bulynnikov - Professor from Tomsk [3] .

Works on the Eastern Sayan , written in that period, partially published posthumously.

He was rehabilitated on March 31, 1954, returned to Leningrad, and again became the dean of the geological prospecting faculty of the Leningrad Mining Institute [4] .

Scientific Activities

Tetyaev proposed a classification of tectonic movements, in which he singled out the oscillatory form of tectogenesis , magmatic, folded, and the form of micro-oscillations. He believed that vertically directed movements play the leading role in tectogenesis and connected them with the supposed phenomena of compression and expansion of the Earth’s matter. He believed that the vertical oscillatory motion can create all known forms of folding. He developed ideas about the conditions of layer formation and proposed an original scheme of the geosynclinal process.

Conducted regional studies in the Baikal region , Transbaikalia and other regions, denying the concept of E. Suess - V. A. Obruchev about the "ancient crown of Asia" and defending the point of view about the younger Caledonian , and for other areas - the Alpine age of their structures and development there is sharyazh . In this case, M. M. Tetyaev developed the point of view of L. de Lone , first expressed in 1911 [5] .

He created one of the first (1933) tectonic zoning schemes of the USSR, based on the allocation of uneven age folded zones [6] .

The tectonic-geomorphological ideas of M. M. Tetyaev, which dominated the world tectonics during the 20th century, led to the birth of the tectonic schools of V. V. Belousov and S. S. Shultz .

Recognition, awards

  • Awarded the Order of Lenin (1948, November), orders, and also medals.
  • The ruins of Tetyaev on the Moon are named after Mikhail Mikhailovich Tetyaev.
