Biography
Frank Nigel Hepper was born March 13, 1929 in Leeds . During the Second World War, the Hepper family moved to Cumbria , where they were previously engaged in farming. After the war, Nigel Hepper studied at the Lida grammar school, then at Kings College , which was then part of Durham University , graduated with a degree in botany.
Since 1950, Hepper worked as a systematist in the herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew . Soon he, along with Ronald Ki, set to work on the reworking of the Flora of West Tropical Africa monograph, completed by 1972. Nigel repeatedly went on expeditions to Africa, as well as to Yemen and Sri Lanka.
Since 1959, Hepper was married to Helen Morrish, with whom he had three sons.
In 1986, Nigel Hepper initiated the organization of the Tropical Forest Genetic Resources Project at the Victoria Botanical Garden (now Limbe , Cameroon ). In 1989, he was awarded the Kew Medal.
Frank Nigel Hepper passed away on May 16, 2013 .
