Biography
Takehira Nagaishi (this is the real name of the actor) was born in the family of a fisherman in the town of Ako (Hyogo Prefecture). After graduating from elementary school, he went to Osaka, where he worked for seven years at a watch shop [1] , then joined the troupe of touring actors, but it soon fell apart. Since 1923, the staff actor of the Shochiku studio [1] , where he first appeared in episodes, and in 1925 played a prominent role in the Hiroshi Shimizu film “The Blade of the Righteous” (already in this film he is listed in the credits under his pseudonym Takeshi Sakamoto).
In 1928, for the first time , he starred in Yasujiro Ozu 's film “Days of Youth” (the film was not preserved, from the first seven lost films directed by Sakamoto was shot in three), and from that moment their long-term collaboration began. Sakamoto was one of those select actors like Tatsuo Saito , Choko Iida and Tisyu Ryu , with whom the distinguished director worked regularly. At first, the roles of Sakamoto in Ozu's films were small, often comedic, for Takeshi Sakamoto had an undoubted comedic talent. In 1933, he played the role of Ochi as Kihati, one of the most important in his film career (the film “ Caprice ”). The deeply dramatic image of the mischievous father is embodied by the actor using all the colors of his talent, from the comic to the tragic. The film was a success, including thanks to the actor's work Sakamoto [2] . After that, Yasujiro Odzu introduced the image of the hero Kihati in his subsequent works The Story of Floating Algae ( 1934 ), The Innocent Girl ( 1935 , one of the lost films of Odzu) and Tokie's Dobling House ( 1935 ). The role in the " Tokyo dock " is considered to be the best job in Sakamoto's acting career.
During the sound period, the actor was less in demand in Odzu films. Between the 1930s and the 1940s, the actor starred a lot from other well-known directors Yasujiro Shimazu , Hiroshi Shimizu , Heinoski Goszyo ... Only by working at the Shochiku studio the actor played in 170 films. Sakamoto continued to act until 1965, more often with Keisuke Kinoshita . In total, his filmography includes 340 [3] films (excluding his work on television).
In 1974, Takeshi Sakamoto was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure (posthumously) [4] .
