The underground city of Naur ( French: Cité souterraine de Naours ) is an underground ensemble located under the city of Naur in France , the province of Picardy . One of the most famous underground structures in France [1] . It is the so-called "muche" ( Muche ) - an underground refuge, characteristic of the north of France, which were created in order to wait for attacks on the settlements, to save lives and property.
The ensemble of the underground city of Naur was able to accommodate up to 3 thousand people. The beginning of its construction dates back to the 9th century [2] . Used by the inhabitants of Naur for many centuries. Residents hid there sometimes for a long time, taking with them food supplies, property, and even livestock. An ingenious chimney system was used so as not to reveal the location of the shelter with smoke from the outbreaks.
The opening of the underground city took place at the end of the XIX century. The network of underground streets, galleries and squares reached 2 kilometers and was located, on average, at a depth of 33 meters, among the buildings was a rather large church. The construction of the shelter was carried out manually [3] .
