Lachanz ( born LaChanze ; born December 16, 1961 ) is an American singer and actress who achieved success through her performances in Broadway musicals.

Lachanz was born in St. Augustine, Florida, and graduated from Baltimore, Maryland State University before studying theater art in Philadelphia. Her debut was in the 1986 Broadway musical Uptown ... It's Hot! , and in 1991 she received the Theater World Award for playing in the one-act musical Once on This Island . The same role brought her the first Tony Award in her career [1] . She also performed in many other productions in subsequent years. From 1998 to 2001, she was married to Calvin Gooding, who died on September 11, 2001 , when La Chanz was pregnant with their second child [2] .
Lachanz won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a musical for Celia’s play in the 2005 musical Purple Flowers of the Fields [1] . Between work on stage, she appeared in the films Strength of Faith , Concierge , and Servant , and was also a guest on the series Cosby Show and Law and Order: Special Corps . In 2014, Lachanz returned to the Broadway stage in the musical If / Then with Idina Menzel [3] .
