Military Success

In 301 BC e. freed Elathea ( Phocis ) from the troops of the king of Macedonia, Cassander (who, under the partition agreement after the Fourth War, received the diadochas in the possession of Hellas) In 288 BC e. Olympiodor liberated Athens from the Macedonians, and two years later he expelled the Macedonian king Antigonus Gonathos from Piraeus (port of Athens), and then successfully repelled the offensive of the Macedonian troops under Eleusis .

Perpetuation of memory

Olympodor, in gratitude for his work against the invaders, his contemporaries in ancient Greece, found many images: the statues are known in the Acropolis of Athens and Delphi (a gift from the inhabitants of Elatea), as well as a picture from Eleusis. Olympodor wore a beard, which is not typical for the rulers of that time, but this was most likely an expression of his anti-Macedonian policy (after all, shaving a beard became fashionable under Alexander the Great ).

Portraits that survive

Of the many portraits of Olympiodore, only one has survived to our time, which, apparently, is an image of a commander: in Caesarea Palestine , a portrait herme of the Roman era with the inscription "Olympiodor" was discovered. This herme was a copy of a more ancient image, the style of which dates back to the 3rd century. BC e., from which it was concluded that this is obviously a portrait of the commander Olympiodor, since other persons of this era with that name were too insignificant or lived later, in the 5th and 6th centuries. n e., which does not match the style of the portrait. This image is stored in one of the museums in Oslo .
